ParticipantKirk…YES.
I’ve been reading for a long time about people waxing poetic about the glory days of flat out 100cc direct drive racing, it just sounds like too much fun. From what i can gather, these engines can be plenty reliable if you turn the revs down to ‘only’ 17-18K and run them on the rich side, none of the horror stories of motors lasting 45 minutes. Power similar (or better) to a modern TaG without the added complexity of clutches, water pumps, starters, batteries, power valves…etc. Just pure, no-nonsense racing in a package that would be MUCH lighter than a TaG. Sounds like a perfect track toy to me for when I want to give the shifter a rest.
Too much time on youtube perhaps…but just look at it! :devil

Got 75 minutes? Cool footage.
http://vimeo.com/17632646Nice find, Jeff, thanks! I had never seen that before. Pretty cool seeing up close footage of F1 from that era, definitely an exciting one…I love reading about it. Shame we’ll likely never see a documentary like that on modern F1…

ParticipantOh, and… :hi

ParticipantThat’s not far off. I started out in a TaG (Rotax) and it was very very good to me. A very easy, low maintenance package that’s pretty user friendly if you’re even a bit mechanically inclined. There are a few odd nuances here and there that you will have to get used to, but it is a racing engine! The beauty of TaG is that you can race them pretty much anywhere with decent sized fields, and it really teaches you good driving habits. You really have to preserve momentum to be fast, and that means being smooth. TaGs do definitely eat chains & sprockets (and clutches, in my case), whereas with the Honda i ran the entire SKUSA schedule (& then some) on 2 chains and only one worn out sprocket (screwed up the alignment!). The stock honda i have now has been even more reliable, and putting a ring in a shifter is no big deal at all. I’ve seen plenty of guys start off in a shifter and do just fine, but I usually recommend starting in a TaG. You really cant go wrong with either. The Stock Honda class is undoubtedly the hottest class in shifters right now, and the fields are growing all over the place. Shifting is too much fun, and where i wanted to end up anyways, so i’ve no regrets with my switch. :driver
With that said, there’s an awfully nice GP8/Stock Honda package for sale in the classifieds….. :walk

ParticipantBig thanks to the GJMS/SKUSA/PPKRC/Utah crew for putting on a great show. Personally…not that great for me, never have i had that many engine problems in one weekend! :bang But the event was great! The BBQ on saturday was spectacular, the Codger race was some good entertainment, and the other general awesomeness I expect when I go out to Grand Junction.
I haven’t raced at GJMS in a couple years (which is a damn shame), and Stacey, i must say…your track is FUN in a Shifter Kart!
My racing season is over, but i’ll see some of y’all in VEGAS BABY. :~

ParticipantCool. Definitely going this weekend!

Participantlol…brian just took the words out of my mouth. This year we’ve had combined S2/S4 fields quite often, so there are a bunch of guys to race against..they just might not be in your class. Heck, most of my racing has been with the S4 guys this year! 😆
