    Mike:

    On Emmo…. imo…. two more.

    On Cevert…. that’s still sad.

On Mario…. my second-most proud American moment in racing (first was Lap 1, USGP 2001) was in Montreal 1978, finding out Saturday afternoon that my photo credential also got me into the “official” race bar atop the Hotel…. 6 or 7 GP drivers around us and Mario walks in, the new World Champion, to a standing ovation from all 100 or so people in there (me being 18 my vocals got away a bit). What a Hero.

Chassis-wise, the Lotus 79 of ’78, I think, was the very start of F1 being processional. The first offender, the end of the thrash in a sense.

The Turbo Renault motor inflicted another injury until 1989. Technology took it from there…. but, the “new” rules of 2009 have made the cars truly hard to drive again.

To lessen the procession, I’d vote for tiny brakes and harder tires…. and make things a bit cheaper (?) to run (trans, brakes, tires….)…. so teams could afford to bring back the V12s for all its reasons.

Here’s one that still screams in my memory.

Yep, Nigel was my favorite. Controlled agression….. I really liked his 1992 Championship #5 (Williams FW-14) car.

I believe, if my memory serves me correct, he won the Indy 500 as a rookie in 1993 as well.

Close Eddy & Eric but no cigar! 93 he had the 500 all sewed up.
Me to the regulars in front of me who have sat at their seats a heck of a lot longer than I: “watch this Mansell guy in red 5, he’s a lion!”
Regulars: “We won’t be watching some british pansy who is over rated!”
10 laps into the race with Mansell passing in the short chute between 1 & 2, regularly, regulars in front turn around and say: “that guy’s got balls THIS BIG”
He lost the race at the final caution restart, Emmo took advantage of a rookie restart mistake, passed his into 1 and Emmo won his 2nd 500. Nigel did win the championship that year. IMO his move at Piralta (SP?) in Mexico was his ballsiest move ever. ON THE OUTSIDE!!! Then trying to pass Senna for 1st at Monaco in 92 (to blemish his victory total) was epic too. Almost the best 2nd place finish in F1 histroy (Gilles takes the cake)

    Out…

You’re right, coulda sworn I could picture him drinking the milk…. musta been Guiness.

Yep, though, agreed on “best second-place finish.” Sorry, Rene, not today.

Nice find, Jeff, thanks! I had never seen that before. Pretty cool seeing up close footage of F1 from that era, definitely an exciting one…I love reading about it. Shame we’ll likely never see a documentary like that on modern F1…

I stand corrected… Nigel was the 1993 Indy 500 “Rookie of the Year” started 8th finished 3rd, then went on to win the IndyCar Championship that same year. He’s still one of my all time favorite F1 and Indy car drivers.

I saw a preview of that movie when it first came out. A friend was working in a theater in Beverly Hills and he called me and invited me to a special showing. It’s been released at least 3 times that I know of under different names. The original title was “One By One”. Even though the cars weren’t as fast back then as they are now, they were more exciting to watch because the slide around more, the suspension moved a lot, and tracks weren’t all billiard table smooth.

Just for the record…..When Emo won he didn’t drink the milk. He drank orange juice for which he was scolded for doing so but he didn’t care he was promoting his orange grove in Brazil.

    Now where were we?

    Just my 2 cents

    Mike E.:

Agreed…. much as I loved both Emmo and Nige, both misbehaved at the Brickyard:
Emmo nudging the milk away (we call that Capitalism today), and Nigel suggesting Dennis Vitolo “didn’t belong there.”

I knew Vitolo when coming up the ranks, paying his way and putting it all on the line.

But Emmo and Nigel were still both great drivers the likes of which we don’t see much today….

We personally always root for the nice guys, like this guy whom you know:
