ParticipantSo here is the deal, I have used the search function quite a bit and am searching for experienced answers in reguards to personal preferences here. Tag vs shifter advantages/disadvantages
I see that a tag runs rear brakes, while you can run front brakes with my weight I would have to forget about them. I feel like a tag is a better alternative for learning to race….but no rear brakes makes me feel like I wont be truely racing, not to mention not shifting
tag’s can be run in more races around Colorado than shifters?(more drivers at the events?)
shifters need piston rings changed often….tag’s need chains/axle gears changed out often .Just trying to hash it out, I am not scared of the wear and tear on the body with a shifter. However I am concerned about buying a tag if im just going to end up shifting with a car/shifter if-when I move from tag(if i start with tag)
Any guiadance here would be appreciated!
Thank you,Anthony :~January 11, 2011 at 9:30 pm #64730Jon Romenesko
ParticipantThat’s not far off. I started out in a TaG (Rotax) and it was very very good to me. A very easy, low maintenance package that’s pretty user friendly if you’re even a bit mechanically inclined. There are a few odd nuances here and there that you will have to get used to, but it is a racing engine! The beauty of TaG is that you can race them pretty much anywhere with decent sized fields, and it really teaches you good driving habits. You really have to preserve momentum to be fast, and that means being smooth. TaGs do definitely eat chains & sprockets (and clutches, in my case), whereas with the Honda i ran the entire SKUSA schedule (& then some) on 2 chains and only one worn out sprocket (screwed up the alignment!). The stock honda i have now has been even more reliable, and putting a ring in a shifter is no big deal at all. I’ve seen plenty of guys start off in a shifter and do just fine, but I usually recommend starting in a TaG. You really cant go wrong with either. The Stock Honda class is undoubtedly the hottest class in shifters right now, and the fields are growing all over the place. Shifting is too much fun, and where i wanted to end up anyways, so i’ve no regrets with my switch. :driver
With that said, there’s an awfully nice GP8/Stock Honda package for sale in the classifieds….. :walk

Participanto btw, does anyone run a kt100 anywhere?
Might postpone paying decent money on a kart untill I can decide/learn on a kt100….
Thanks for the info btw, and that gp is slicker than a booger on a doorknob 😀

ParticipantKt100s are long since dead. However you can race it in the open class at IMI. The track owners have made some very good decisions this year and selected two cost effective options for us. If you want to race competitively there really are two options, Rotax and Stock Moto shifter. I honestly wouldnt mess around with anything else.

ParticipantAnthony,
I read your posts on thecoloradokarter.com about purchasing a tag vs. a shifter. You are about 3 months ahead of me in your decision making.
Have you purchased a kart?
Was it a shifter or a tag?If you bought a shifter, are you coming from a motocross or superbike background? I’m transitioning from a motocross/superbike background into karts, so I’m wondering if that matters?

ParticipantBoth of you should come over next weekend and watch the SKUSA Summer Nationals here at Grand Junction Motor Speedway. You will have 200 of the best Tag and shifter pilots in the country competing for 3 days of great racing. Good chance to walk around and visit with all drivers in both classes, also a great opportunity to see all the different tag motor packages and different chassis’s run.
