This was posted on the Colorado Karter last year regarding TaG USA rules on the carb and airbox. I think Doug Welch originally posted it:

“The pdf for the Rotax does state the #40 slide. However, section 2.2.?? on carbs states that the slide is part of jetting and that jetting is open. TagUSA rules state specifically that the slide is part of jetting, jetting is open but that the slide assembly must be OEM (Dell’orto).

I’ve specifically talked with Marty Casey, national tech director for TagUSA, on this issue. He tells me that section 2.2.?? overrides the pdf sheet from Rotax. As long as we run the standard Dell’orto VHSB, we can change all the internals we want with standard Dell’orto parts.

The same issue on rads and airboxes. The pdf talks about the standard rad and airbox, however, the body of the TaGUSA rules let us run any rad or airbox we want. Again, the writen rules overrides the pdf from Rotax. “

    Garrick,

My Rotax just needed a rebuild with new bearings, connecting rod, and piston. No external damage to the engine or anything else. I was lucky that pieces didn’t flail around internally and cause more serious damage. I don’t know what caused the failure but there was a batch of defective Rotax parts a few years ago and I suspect some of those might have been in my engine.

    Rick,
Fortunately my flight time at Greeley was too short for me to get too scared, and besides, it was difficult enough just for me to figure out where I was. :loony: The racing accidents I’ve had have always been less scary than the near misses because the accidents always happen quickly and are done. One of worst ones was when another car spun in front of my FV in Turn 9 at Riverside at about 120 mph. I don’t know how I missed him, but it was a matter of inches. It took me a few laps to calm down after that one. :bow

The Rotax clutch doesn’t provide much of a mechanical fuse. The clutch stays locked up from pretty low rpms on up. When I blew a Rotax 3 yrs ago, I was really glad no one was following me – the rear wheels locked up and I skipped across the track. 😯

I live in Erie, only about 10 minutes from IMI also. I’ve been racing in TaG Master and Rotax Master for about 4 years. If you want to come by and talk about karting, give me a call. I’d be glad to help you out.

    Jim,

I totally agree with Rick’s comments. Nice job to you and everybody at The Track. And, oh yeah, it was fun racing with you.

    Kirk,

Yes, I’ll be racing this weekend.
    8)

I tried to test the kart last Sunday, but had a mechanical problem. I think we’ve got it fixed now.

The hand is a bit stiff and sore, but it’s gotten a lot better in the last week.

    See you there,

    Tyson,

Thanks so much for helping pack up my equipment and driving it back to IMI. It was a big relief to know that you and Brad, my pit crewman, had taken care of that. It was also very kind of Brad L at IMI to let my stuff stay there until I could pick it up.

The kart looks pretty ugly on first glance, but I think it’s repairable. The frame needs a little straightening in the back, but the engine and the front of the kart look like they’re in good shape. There are several components that need to be replaced, but it’s not nearly as bad as I expected.

It will be a few weeks before I can pick up tools with my right hand, let alone drive. So I’ll miss a few races but I’ll be back when I can.

Hi Rich – we need you back out there again too!

    Hi everybody,

I just want to drop a note to let you know that I didn’t have any serious injuries and to thank everyone who helped me yesterday. My only injury is a badly sprained wrist. It’s amazing that after such a violent accident that my only discomfort is the wrist and a badly bruised back.

Even though I never unconscious, I was pretty disoriented for a few minutes after the accident so I don’t remember everyone that was there. This is the first time I’ve been hurt since I started driving competively in 1970, and I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to see familiar faces at the accident scene, for Troy to visit me at the hospital, and for the phone calls and posts on the internet asking how I was doing.

Thank you to the all the people on the accident scene- track personnel, Mike, paramedics, and firemen. Though I didn’t want to be the one to test it, our safety crew did everything they should have. Thank you also to the Pre-grid workers who noticed that I had forgotten to put on my neck collar. I hate to think what could have happened if I had gone out without it. The doctors and nurses at the Northern Colorado Medical Center were great too, and were very thorough in their examination and did everything they could to make me comfortable.

Also a special thanks to the karters who packed up my equipment and drove my trailer to IMI. I’m really sorry that I’m not sure who actually did that.

I also want to report that all my safety equipment performed well. My KBC helmet was scratched, but didn’t crack. My Sparco driving suit kept me from getting any abrasions. It proves that having the best safety equipment is worth the money.

I hope I did not leave anyone out. All the offers of help and the actions of everybody yesterday show again that the Colorado Karting community is the best.

    Thank you all,
    Charles

One other thought on this: Keep listening. You can often hear when another kart is getting close.

    C’mon guys,

You’re overcomplicating this. Blue flags should be used for karts that are getting lapped. If you get blue flagged, let the faster kart(s) by. See Doug’s earlier post for the proper way to let faster karts pass.

Blue flagging karts on the same lap doesn’t make any sense because we don’t have mirrors and can’t see who’s coming. Besides, there’s no action to take in that situation other than just try to stay in front. Blue flagging like this is just a distraction.
