ParticipantRick brought up some advantages of owning your own Transponder. Other advantages are:
It’s yours.
No waiting for one race morning.
You know the condition of the battery and how much of a charge it has.
No rental fee.I bought one in the late ’90s for $200 in Daytona. The rental fee was $25.00 a weekend. It paid for itself in 4 race weekends. I sold it in ’06 for $100.00. (in good working condition). Point being I got my dollars worth and had less hassle at the track.

ParticipantJames you are too funny. Unfortunately the suitcase drivers (suitcase of cash) started earlier. The American short tracker was getting the short end of the stick back in the late ’70’s

It’s nice to know that the IRL is attracting fans. I just wish there were more of you!
I am also too young to have been around in it’s glory days. I was just lucky to know the guys who did it. AJ Watson, Wayne Leary, etc.. These were the behind the scene guys who were the innovators.
I think they should scrap what we race today and come up with a new game plan. hybrid engines, alternative fuels (Ethanol is a good step), etc.. Make it an industry again.

George was my great uncle. Grandfather’s brother. My Grandpa was a 3 time veteran of the race

ParticipantJim get the Buffalo Turbine and Matty working. The track should be clean and green in no time! All you need is pump gas and Jager :cheers:

ParticipantThe competition level is greater, I completely agree! But, I do not beleive in professional spec racing. The cars are all the same and it took inginuity out of the equation. Inginuity and development is what helped make the 500 what it was.
It’s not the fault of the organization. Technology just pushed the envelope too far.

ParticipantMari Hulman George’s cry of “ladies and gentlemen start your engines” still gives me goose bumps and draws a tear in my eye.
Ladies = Danica and Sarah

ParticipantThe 500 is dead too! The whole month of May is dead for that matter. (racing)
However, the party on Georgetown and 16th still rages on! It’s more of a happening on Memorial day, than an actual race!

ParticipantThe supply issue isn’t an issue as of now.
