ParticipantAirboxes are required only per individual track regulations. They will be required at Grand Junction Motor Speedway, due to the sound issue and SKUSA. They will not be required at IMI or Action Karting. I am pretty sure they won’t be required at Steamboat.

ParticipantBelow is a copy of what I posted on another thread. There has been nothing about changing the 125 shifter weights per the new SKUSA release. In speaking with Brad, he seemed inclined to leave things as is, which is what was agreed upon at the meeting. Any changes at this point are going to need to be discussed, and agreed upon by the track owners.

I have a few things to say about the weights and testing. First, I believe that Marty has done his best to get all of the engine importers and engines that importers would not provide together on this project. He has put in alot of effort in a short period time under pressure from everyone with many things unexpected happening at the last minute go wrong do you know what I mean? Thanks! There were three runs done on each engine. I did see the results of the testing and was surprised that most of the engines were very close in HP, within 1-1.2. I did not see the results of the Italsistem but if it has the power stated it should have more weight added for the digital Ign. There was not one engine over 27 HP. If the digital ign engine has 31 hp it should not weigh the same as the Sonik, Comer and Biland in Master. The easy kart had the lowest HP 24-25. The Sonik and Roc were in the 27’s, Biland, leopard, Rotax, Comer, BM, 26’s. In Sr I would have the Easy kart at the lowest weight 350, Leopard, Comer, BM, Biland, Rotax (with open needle on carb) weight 365, Sonik, Roc, Italsistem weight 375. Add 15lbs to Master all engines. It is up to Marty to release the results, he probably does not want to open that can of worms but I would If I was him just to get the brain damage over with. I would hope that they would be quick to make any adjustments and not wait for three races and piss everyone off if the weights they pick are a mile off. I do not know how they came up with the weights from the data I read.

So, the weights are yet to be set in stone – on that note, he also said that the Junior TaGs (all the junior restricted motors that were tested) were very close in hp, and should be run at 320lbs for all of them. Also, we should try to keep the Senior, or unrestricted motors, out of the Junior TaG class… we don’t need to be piling on so much weight.Angie

ParticipantDon,
What was agreed on at the meeting is still the way it is. I am awaiting some final OKs on an updated version and then will post, and print the rules, “officially”. There will be specific section numbers and listed exceptions for some of the classes. But nothing will be a surprise, it is as it was agreed on that meeting. Soon!Mike, thanks for the kind words! I am trying.
On all of the tires and weights, I have yet to hear anything new from the track owners on this – I will be checking with them to get these things finalized.

Darn, I thought MG yellow tires WERE going to be allowed….
no, that was changed because the yellows were too good!
First, at the meeting cams for Animals were not discussed, but the only rule change I heard for the Animals from last year to this year is that we CAN now re-jet the carb. I don’t know enough about the Animals yet, but I have been told the stock cam can wear out pretty fast versus a ground cam. Anyone have any thoughts on this??
WKA rules allow the jetting anyway, and that is what we are going by. the only exception to WKA is allowing the billet rod for the Stock Briggs on methanol.
Second, the was no discussion on types of clutches allowed for either the Animal or Flathead at the meeting, and last year I am sure I saw Animals and flatheads running disc type clutches. Now, doesn’t WKA Tech Manual say only 2 or 3 centrifugal clutches allowed?? So is this gonna be another exception??
This is a good point, and I think this exception should have been specified, because I believe that there has always been an open clutch rule in the past. I will check on this and clarify, but everyone would have to change what they are running if we did not keep that exception. I am sure there are some other things like this that we are forgetting, and we need to get them in writing as well.
thanks,

ParticipantIt was my understanding that the TAGUSA has more information coming out in the next week or so, and that is when all of this is going to be set. You can expect all of the TAG weights to be adjusted. I will keep you posted, but if anyone sees anything new, or if I am missing something please let me know. Talking to Brad, this is what I understood.

ParticipantRod, what was discussed and agreed on at the meeting? The rules as far as the Junior 1 class goes, I think are just as I have stated – the only exception voted on there was the Comer weight and the billet rod for the Briggs. My comment about “unofficaial” was more in regards to the weights that are still being debated. Obviously I am not the one to make any sort of “official” decision, but those that are don’t seem to be questioning this issue. I knew that not being at the meeting was going to haunt me!
Graeme,
As for the tires, it is my understanding that the MG yellow was changed to MG red because the durometer reading on the yellow is a mere 50 (maybe why it is so popular!), and the red is still only 52, where the Dunlop SL4 is 60, and the Bridgestone YHC is 58. Don’t yell at me, this is info provided to me by Brad. I know they want to keep it fair, and that is why the change.Angie

ParticipantRod,
Good points, and I hope we see some answers here. I had to go ahead and get the beginnings of the rules out in the open for these reasons. I had so many questions, that I thought the best way to iron them out was to get it going on here, again.
I am curious what other mods from WKA were discussed and/or agreed upon at the meeting. As for the cams, is the difference between IKF and WKA huge? This may be a stupid question, and I thought about sending via private message, but then thought that maybe others could learn from my question.
I see that IKF says “Only broached stock factory camshaft with stock alignment as shipped from factory is permitted. Mechanical compression relief lift is required on exhaust lobe. Camshaft profile limits: Each lobe may be out of specification in two places, provided that subsequent visual inspection of camshaft lobes reveals no alteration to surface finish of lobes”
And WKA says ” Only stock factory camshaft cores from Briggs and Stratton are permitted, part numbers 555532 and 555584. Lobes may be ground, but not to exceed .870 base circle. Mechanical compression relief is non-tech. Camshaft lobes must remain flat and of original width.”
the chart of camshaft profile limits is the same for each.So can you explain to me how much can be gained from WKA vs IKF?
thanks, I am learning, but slowly,

ParticipantLoren,
Keep dreaming is right!
That brings up some costs that were not mentioned…$15 at IMI to get a pit on the asphalt on race day. $25 to practice on Saturday (unless you are a season pass holder), and $8 per additional crew or spectator.

ParticipantScott, thank you for the kind words.. however, you give me far too much credit. Curt Kistler is the one that had the brilliant idea of having some “off season” seminars. He mentioned that one of the topics could be on the Mychron, and I happened to have been currently working with you over the phone getting our system dialed in. It was an obvious solution to suggest that you be the one to help us. I was thinking more along the lines of supplying some materials or something, I admit I didn’t expect you to jump on a plane and come help us face to face! That is truly appreciated, and I think maybe you know how much after meeting some of the karters here.
thanks,
