Thanks for the suggestion, I have seen that thread and this would require me to buy another engine that is not an established class at the club level. If I buy another motor, and there are not enough to race, it has become a poor investment. I am looking for a class that is affordable and will be there for more than a year or two. Right now there is no such thing….

There seemed to be a few interested in the World Formula this past spring and wanted to see if there were any others that would be interested for 2008. I have been running a World Formula on my kart with the kids and this motor has been solid all season. This motor would be a great motor for JR2 and as a starter class for a SR as a stepping stone at the club level to a faster TAG or shifter. The basic engine package is under $1000 except for a mount, silencer, wire harness and battery if you want to use the on board starter. It comes with a bullet proof clutch with 2 219 sprockets. You can also change to a 35 sprockets with that same clutch.

This package is popular out East, the West coast, Europe, and Canada for tight spec racing with minimal engine maintenance. The “World Formula” is an engine package was originally designed by the CIK to be a true spec 4 stroke engine rated at 15hp, 200cc’s, for under $1000 US and Briggs has been the only kart engine manufacturer that has met these specifications. I was just homolagated into the CIK until 2011 which means the motor will not change drastically for quite a few years. It has also been adopted by the WKA and IKF so this package can be raced in many places around the country. This motor is nothing like the old Briggs flathead or early Animal and with a 7100rpm rev limiter built in to it’s PVL electronic ignition, it is really very hard to hurt this engine, unless you forget to put in oil.

The current engine for JR2 is a Briggs Animal that is running on methanol at 285lbs. The World Formula would give you a bit more HP on racing gas for easier maintenance and could be bumped up to 300 lbs to accommodate older or bigger kids. There are a few JR2 karts in southern Colorado that run this configuration and would be able to race up here in a different venue if they would like. With the JR1 karts slowing down for next year, this would also give an older or more seasoned racer a chance to move up to more speed and still use the chassis that they already have. Dave at http://www.MHPSonline.com has a good photo of the latest model and Comet, American Power Sports, and others also have these motors available.

So my question here is are there any other folks interested? I would like to hear from you.

    Thanks Dave,

This past year was fun and we would like to thank Dave at MHPS for building a very reliable and consistent motor that ran great every race day and practice days. All I had to do was change the oil. This motor was a Gen 2 Animal that was built to be every bit as reliable as any of the engines out there. Our motor ran up to 7800 rpm all year with no problems at all.

Mike, I don’t think Tyler will want to let it go! Thanks again to you for setting up this chassis “race ready”. The only thing I had to mess with was the front track and tire pressure the whole year. It has been a very good chassis and we hope to use it as long as we can.

Russ, It has been fun watching Taylor and Ty racing all year. Most races were very close and we had no idea Ty would be competitive enough to win races this year.

Thanks to the rest of the Colorado karting community for the tips and encouragement. It has made it fun to come out on race day.

For those who don’t know what class we were running, it was the JR2 Briggs class in the IMI/TTAC series. This class is a very good class for us after racing a few times last year in JR1 Animal. It was a step up in speed with his personal best time at IMI of 58.8 sec. Not bad for the lowly WKA stock Briggs Animal (at 285lbs).

I would like to start another discussion soon about JR2 to see if there are any interested in stepping up to JR2. With JR1 Honda slowing down next year, those that are a little older and/or more experienced may find JR2 would be an option without finding a whole new package. The Briggs Animal is very successful in the Midwest and Eastern part of the US for oval, sprint and road racing. The Briggs World formula is popular in the West as a Jr and Sr “TAG” style engine package that provides an inexpensive and competitive class for some very close racing. As far as the rumors that a Briggs is unreliable and breaks down all the time, I just have not seen that. I have 2 stock Gen 1’s (one of which Tyler won his first race with) , a Gen 2 that Ty raced with after the 2nd race this year, and a Gen 3 World Formula that I use and have not had one breakdown. Just tune and change oil, it has been that simple.

Fuzzy, I will take a shot at some of the questions you have.
The world formula is not a TAG USA motor but does have an onboard electric starter. It is rated at 15 hp with a rev limiter set at 7100 rpm. The CIK has homologated this motor to their “world formula” for a world wide standard of 200cc, 15 hp, all under $1000 for the package including the motor, header, air filter, and clutch. TAG motors are approx. 28 hp and much faster but are more money to start off. With the rev limiter set at 7100 rpm, this will extend the life of the motor and I have heard that most motors will last for at least one racing season without falloff in power.

The advantages of this motor in addition to its low price is it will not require an expensive chassis to be competitive and you will not go through tires as quickly as the faster TAG karts.

The only disadvantage I can see is that it is slower than TAGs.

The WF is popular out east and on the west coast but has not caught on as much in the mountain region, at least not yet. I am hoping that a world formula class will form in the Denver area as well as CRE. I think it would be a very good entry level class for 2 age groups: JR2, 12-15 and SR, 15+. Some tracks offer this package for JR1 (8-12) with a restrictor plate.

It is about karters that wanted a less expensive package with much closer racing than the TAG classes in their area. Racing is relative, you only need to be faster than the others on the track to win the race.

So when are the 4 strokes coming in the shifters?

We started last year and I have been trying to find what S1, S4, G1, etc. mean. I thinks S is for shifter but not sure what the numbers or G mean. Last year when I was looking at what classes were available, I looked all over and never found any documents that show a class structure table online that gave me the answer. Just one thing that was a little frustrating for a newbie.

Not only is the code complex, there are 2 components of the total package that are not in your control if you have a web hosting service, the code processor and the database. If either are updated, you may have problems with compatibility and things start breaking. In dealing with hardware and software for almost 20 years, I too know first hand how hard it can be to keep up with all the pieces of the puzzle.

Way to go Angie, keep up the good work! I would say that with the season over, we all could be patient and let you fix it right and not hurry to “band aid” these problems.

Tom, I have a world formula but do not race as of yet but have plenty of laps on it. I have done lots of tinkering on the kart but this motor in its stock form requires little maintenance. Just jetting changes and changing oil so far for me. I don’t know the status of that class at CRE but I do wish there was a class here in Denver. I think it would be a great starter class. Welcome and good luck!

Rick, It says 9 am in the classified forum. Has it changed? Or is this a ploy to buy all the good stuff before everyone gets there…. 😀

Jim, So let me get this straight, this is NOT an official IMI/TTAC club series race, but is one of these monthly races for fun?

I just wanted to be sure because I’m thinking of changing engines for testing to a World Formula for Jr2 since there is no points involved. (around the same power as the Animal on alky)

Or if a World Series party starts up, we may not race and go to that 😀 (Go Rockies!)

Or maybe since the kids are on fall break, might go somewhere for the weekend….

    The possibilities are endless….

Since it was not scheduled as a double points race from the beginning, someone who has made every race this season and decided to take this race as a drop will lose a lot of points on that second main. If there were 3 drops, one at each track and another of your choice, then it might be OK…Just my thoughts.
