Hello? Anyone out there? Nobody has anything to say about the SKUSA news? Some exciting things going on and I can’t wait to see what they have to offer up! Big Tony should be reason enough…!

Hey Curt, how late can we move into PPIR on Thursday? I have an honest-to-goodness job these days and can’t go play karting hooky whenever I want anymore. :loony:

Old packing makes things difficult, seems like it’s more stubborn when it has a lot of hours. Also, you might have the old style stinger (Rotax updated it) that tends to break at the furthest end. I’ve been through several, so I feel your pain. Once I upgraded to the new style (read: better built) stinger I haven’t had problems. Unfortunately your best bet is to just pull on it until it comes out. That old packing might be stuck to the walls of the pipe, so you might need something long you can stick down In there and hook on to the packing.

Tip: Stick a sticker at the end of the pipe closest to the U-bend. When the sticker starts to discolor, it’s time to change the packing.

This is a good baseline to start from. When I ran Rotax in tag senior I always found that the MG Yellows worked best at 12-13 psi hot. Start with the cold pressures Jason provided. Check the pressures asap after you come off the track to find your hot pressures and tune from there.

Went last night, had a blast! Those things really get up and go with the DC motors, instant torque is fun! The facility is huge and looks like it could accommodate a lot of people. The track surface is better than i expected – i had expected a slick surface like you find at most indoor tracks – it looks pretty abrasive, but like Dave mentioned there’s not a lot of grip. Really looking forward to turning laps here during the off season, especially when it’s cold & snowy out. Also, put me down as “interested” for a weekday racing league.

I’ve been waiting for this place to open up forrrrreeever! I’ll definitely be checking it out this weekend. After trying out indoor karting at SEMA in Vegas a few years ago, I’ve been hooked. Great way to get your karting fix in the winter.

    Thanks for the report, Dave!

This thread’s been kind of quiet. Nobody wants to chime in about SKUSA? Ok…I’ll take a swing.

I think the series has big promise. Their intention that I got out of the meeting was this; true regional competition. Regional competition that’s over and above what we’ve come to expect in the past. If you want to take your program to the next level, or even nationally, SKUSA wants to give you a place to do it. Some random thoughts:

–Each race will have the same officials, tech people, scale people, corner workers, etc. And these are people that know karting, they know the rules, they know the flags. I really don’t think I’ve seen a traveling crew like that ever in my 5 years in karting.

–The PPIR track looks FUN and FAST. Some good technical sections too. The draft will play a big part of things, it’s going to be awesome on a shifter. I’ve never been on the high banks or in a draft before so I can’t wait. It you like speed you will love this event. Plus we’ll be able to use te same facilities that the NASCAR boys used. This means showers and electricity. How cool is that?

–Racing for real trophies, not little plastic ones. (that actually got applause 😆 )

–The Voice of SKUSA MR will be Tony LaPorta, aka the best damn announcer this side of Rob ‘book it!’ Howden

–No bull officiating. Flaggers not afraid to use the black flag. No gimmies in tech (for anyone). Rule and regs continuity from here to Vegas.

–More track time. 3 (?) heats and a main not only mean more track time, but we’ll have to do it on one set of tires. This means you’ll have to manage your tires so you’ll be fast on lap 25 of the main. Speaking of lap 25, the races will be scored by distance, not laps. So a race at one track might be longer than a race at another. 20 lap mains are fine at club races, but if you want to race nationally you’re gonna have to race longer races. So get to the gym!

    — No affiliation with any one track. We’re there to race. No conflict of interest there.

If you want to race with some real pros, seems the SKUSA MR is it. They might have a lot to live up to, but i think the right guys and girls are behind this.

Thanks to the SKUSA Crew for taking their Saturday to show and tell, and staff at the Skylark for opening early and having some good brews on tap. Also, that pizza was really good… 8)

No matter how many spares you carry with you, it’ll be the one thing you didn’t pack that will break.

    Ain’t that the truth! :loony:

Joe, Kirk, and Brad (lol) all have good suggestions. As far as Rotax specific spares to pack….

    – Clutch parts. Decent idea to keep a spare, complete clutch with you because you can snap the posts on the flywheel (happened to me twice this past season) and that makes for a bad day fast. At bare minimum i would keep a clutch rebuild kit on hand for when you do break springs, etc. Ideally…both.
    – in-line Fuel filters
    – Gaskets for the powervalve
    – o-rings for the powervalve
    – Exhaust springs
    – clips for the carb needle (these are easy to lose…ask me how i know!)
    – front (clutch drum) gears (these can get chewed up fast if your alignment is off)
    – exhaust packing & stinger (every 10 hours…usually sooner)

The RTax is an amazingly reliable engine, but it does have chinks in its armor.

I’ll be there. I’m enjoying these yearly bench racing sessions at the Skylark, plus I want to hear more about SKUSA so I can plan my season.
