ParticipantHey Jeff,
Us skiers are out here-I skied the dunes-even on tele’s in 1987. I lived in Crested Butte for 11 years. We were the guys that were “rediscovering” the tele turn in the early to late 80’s. Brad English wrote one of the first books I think in the late 70’s. The tele gear (cross country) was easier to do patrol work on in Crested Butte so some of us liked them better for doing control (bombing snow) work.
The Butte has so much double Black terrain and back before all of the surface lifts went in it was quite the deal to control it. So the free heal and metal edged cross country gear was nice and light weight. Problem was how to turn the damn things! My first tele boots were lace up Asolo Summits with a homemade plastic heel cuff. My other buddies were integral in developing the first boot with plastic-the good ol Merril and then the Scarpa. Eventually it all went complete plastic and that is why the new school dudes can pull off all of the tricks you see now. Back in the day it was like skiing in bedroom slippers!
We also used to ski (tele) on what were known as ‘steincomps’. The word comes from 2 words-frankenstein and competition. When the competitive tele series started in Utah and Colorado people would take old leather ‘Alpine” boots (some lace some buckle up) and would tear the sole off and attach a 3 pin sole to work in their bindings. Get a shoe guy to sew on a new sole. They looked like Frankenstein boots. We used to compete in the tele series-hence the word “Steincomp”. I still have my pair-they were my Dad’s old ‘Heinke’ alpine buckle ups from 1964-the year I was born. I pull them out from time to time and freak everyone out on the lift. If someone says “hey nice steincomps” then I know for sure that they’re old school.
Great footage-thanks-brought back lots of old memories!…cheers

ParticipantYou’re correct Larry. I seem to like to get caught up in the thorns.
I’m critical because I know what it could have been.joescal
ParticipantYeah- I realize its not F1 coverage-just thought it could have been better. The piece on Kyle Ray was good-maybe a little long. How many other CO racers even appeared on screen? No Roman, Rodney, Mikey and the others? very little JD. One of our drivers in my pit was a 17 year old girl from Florida racing DD2. That would’ve been a nice change and a good little story. She was cute and fast and would’ve made a great interview-not one shot-even on track-oh well. Just wish they would’ve mixed it up a bit. Cant win em all.

ParticipantWhile I agree with you guys that it is great that we have some karting on TV and that it is a good thing in general…I gotta say that I am very unimpressed with Altitudes coverage. Yes I’m prepared for the wrath to come but look at this production honestly. While my opinion may sound harsh it is honest.
While watching the footage last night I was disappointed. The whole thing seemed way too ‘rookie’. There was very little in board shots and most of the focus was on the race leaders exclusively throughout the whole race. The in board shots that were shown lasted for 3 seconds at most. The commentary was weak at best and they couldn’t even announce (introduce) a complete field-not once. Many drivers on track weren’t even shown once. There was absolutely no coverage of the busy pits or parc furme and the interview with Joe Ramos was ridiculous! I know I sound harsh but if you werent into karting would you have stay tuned to this?
The real terrible part was when they crammed the last 2 seconds of the senior race in at the end-horrible! They didnt explain the end of the Senior race or the delay etc.I’m sorry but I cant just go along and say that this was great because honestly it was pretty lame. 2 hours is a lot of coverage. How come I felt like I was watching 15 minutes of the same thing for 2 hours. I think Altitude should be embarrassed. Sorry to sound so harsh but its disappointing to see a great opportunity wasted. I do applaud Jim for his efforts but feel like Altitude dropped the ball.
I know I may get slaughtered for this but remember it is my opinion only.
Watch it again and I think you’ll see what I mean. Wide screens make everyone look fat! And HD wide screen..well lets just say that I’m glad I’m not on TV!joescal
ParticipantI did think the CO contingent did well-we would have done even better without some of the bad luck. I did forget to mention Kyle Ray-great racing Kyle!
Also thanks to Barry for letting our team come last minute to the shop and dyno our engines for break in. We stuck 2 DD2 motors in the first days of practice and needed either a parking lot or dyno and Barry came through for us-cheers.
great event.

ParticipantYes quite the circus-but a great one. I cant believe the logistics that must go into an event of this caliber. Jim and crew have their hands full and look to be doing an excellent job.
I am helping a team from Florida wrench all week. This is a wonderful learning experience and it’s quite something to see this level unfold and to be a part of it. As the week rolls on I’m sure it will get even better.
Everyone should come and see this thing. You wont recognize the place.
The Colorado boys look to be great and hopefully we’ll have a good showing!!
here’s to the madness (‘’), j

ParticipantI’m selling my whole TaG package.
ItalKart Supersonic chassis w/ sealed Rotax motor.
I have EVERYTHING to go racing. I can send you a complete list if interested.
There is no such thing as no maintenance in karting. No matter what setup you go with you’ll be throwing money at it. Some less then others but every set up requires money-period. jjoescal
ParticipantI didnt go through tech because I knew I wasnt going to go to Grands even if my rookie a– did get in. This series is too expensive on the national level. Good fun on the club level however. As I said in an earlier post…if Rotax is trying to cater to the average karter then they have priced this series too high. I have heard the same thing over and over again-“I cant afford to go to Grands even if I qualify”. Many folks are in this boat. I am curious to see how many folks are at the grands with a tiny trailer or van.
My hunch is not many. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong but I bet there are more 500K and up rigs then average folks trying to win on a national level.I qualified higher then all previous 3 races. I was only tenths off of the pace and felt great in the races except for my clutch slipping on the formation laps. Anyone else ever have this problem. When the light went green I had no pull until maybe close to the end of the first lap-then everything was great until finish, other then starting about a lap back.
Unless you have a mechanic and some disposable cash this series is very difficult. My place it at the club level and that is fine with me.
As rookie on used mojos I guess I dont have too much to complain about except that it was a ton of fun. Thanks to Jim and Staff-Ed, Caroline, Angie, Matt, Ian and track workers, Ben and all the rest-Thanks for a fun series that seemed to run flawlessly, you guys run a tight ship…I mean Track.
Time to put on the MG’S!!!! oh yeah, and take off 20lbs.!!!!!
cheers, jjoescal
Participantwell put Joe-for me this is all about fun and fun it has been. I need to remember that fun is indeed the priority for me-not everyone else. Smoking the next guy on brand new tires is icing on the cake. I have lots of half used Mojos that no one else wanted (cant blame them)-they were free, they’re hard to tune the chassis with and last a long time. I guess I’ll be skating around for a while-but hey it keeps me in shoes and I can still have fun right? I figure its all good training for next year when I put MG’s back on. Its nice to know there is similar company out there Joe, cheers, j
…BTW-there is a neat article in NKN about the Track and the Grands coming to town-who’s the bozo in kart 444 following Greg Welch around? I don’t think they wanted to print that it was Team BFD Racing!

ParticipantComing into this thread a little late but still relevant…
As a rookie to this sport take what I have to say with a grain but also use it as a perspective from an AVERAGE karter. Guys like me are new enough that our feedback should be valuble to the industry in general. Shop owners, track owners, event coordinaters, other karters should all take rookie feedback with at least one open ear.I’m not independently wealthy and have a wife in school etc. And some days I wonder if I should even be doing this. With that said, I bought a Rotax motor originally because of the length of time on the motor between rebuilds-it seemed more cost effective… I also entered the RMax Challenge series because the Mojos last longer and there are only 4 races-it seemed more cost effective…I had no grand illusions of qualifying for the Grands, especially as a rookie. Well with 1 race to go I have a shot. I now find out that if you WANT to go you probably will. Cool, just sign up! What? RIGHT NOW! We havent even finished the series yet. There is also another little problem-entering the Grands is NOT cost effective. I can barely afford tires let alone an entry fee of $700. When will my refund come back? Hopefully quicker then my registration kit did when I signed up. I also know that to race throughout this event is going to cost 12-13 hungee on a good day. I understand this is a big event and as a rookie I needed to inquire sooner about the entry fee. However I do think its funny the way they market all of this. I guess its disappointing to get to a point where the entry fee keeps someone like myself from going. I know many many folks in a similar boat. If karting is to grow and cater to the average guy/gal, it aint going to happen through this series. Of course this is my rookie opinion and maybe Rotax will prove me wrong but if in another year or two when the entry fee is a cool grand-no pun intended, and the numbers are down, then dont say I didnt tell you so.
The club level is for me-a race here or there on worn down tires is great fun-dont need to win at 43 years of age-just need some speed and a good time with others. I’d rather spend $700 in beer for everyone at the Track then on an entry fee. Maybe that will happen AFTER my wife is out of school. Hopefully there will be some sort of space in karting for folks like myself for years to come. Cheers and good luck to the Colorado contenders going to the Grands! Wish I could be there, j
