ParticipantHey Jeff,
Us skiers are out here-I skied the dunes-even on tele’s in 1987. I lived in Crested Butte for 11 years. We were the guys that were “rediscovering” the tele turn in the early to late 80’s. Brad English wrote one of the first books I think in the late 70’s. The tele gear (cross country) was easier to do patrol work on in Crested Butte so some of us liked them better for doing control (bombing snow) work.
The Butte has so much double Black terrain and back before all of the surface lifts went in it was quite the deal to control it. So the free heal and metal edged cross country gear was nice and light weight. Problem was how to turn the damn things! My first tele boots were lace up Asolo Summits with a homemade plastic heel cuff. My other buddies were integral in developing the first boot with plastic-the good ol Merril and then the Scarpa. Eventually it all went complete plastic and that is why the new school dudes can pull off all of the tricks you see now. Back in the day it was like skiing in bedroom slippers!
We also used to ski (tele) on what were known as ‘steincomps’. The word comes from 2 words-frankenstein and competition. When the competitive tele series started in Utah and Colorado people would take old leather ‘Alpine” boots (some lace some buckle up) and would tear the sole off and attach a 3 pin sole to work in their bindings. Get a shoe guy to sew on a new sole. They looked like Frankenstein boots. We used to compete in the tele series-hence the word “Steincomp”. I still have my pair-they were my Dad’s old ‘Heinke’ alpine buckle ups from 1964-the year I was born. I pull them out from time to time and freak everyone out on the lift. If someone says “hey nice steincomps” then I know for sure that they’re old school.
Great footage-thanks-brought back lots of old memories!…cheers

ParticipantJoe, that is awesome. Plastic boots, active bindings, and shaped skis are pretty much cheating compared to the stuff you guys used to tear it up with!
I don’t think I would like tele nearly as much as I do if I had to use that gear!

Erm, torn ACL? :idn:
Jon, don’t hate the snow snakes. They strike without warning. You are in their habitat.
