What happened last weekend that caused all the DQ’s? Weight? Garwood Fuel? Wrong sticker on your nosecone?
Us inquiring minds want to know…
Please…July 23, 2007 at 10:39 pm #58629Doug WelchParticipantTech was breaking seals at the end. Many racers who were not running as part of the Mile High challenge choose not to go through tech and took a DQ instead.
As far as racers failing tech, no more failed than at the last race at Centennial.

I declined to go thru tech after the main bcause Scott was tearing engines down to the case. I guess the seal means nothing. For me it was a matter of economics. Pay to have my engine resealed so I could finish in 4th and get 1st place points in the RMAX mile high series which would of cept me in 3rd overall or not go thru tech and probably drop to 4th in points. Either one gets me nothing seeing I declined to go to nationals last week. The out of towners and non mile high series entrants would of gained nothing but to have there names in the results and end up with a resealing fee.
So I have a question for all the Rotax guys. What happens if Scott tears it down and find that the piston, cylinder or whatever is out of spec and you get QD’d. Do you get a new engine, cylinder or whatever from rotax or the builder or are you screwed? Is Rotax willing to stand behind their products?
Starting to question the sealed engine thing here.

Better bring it to Doug! Doug said he would reseal for the cost of parts, I believe. Correct me if I am wrong Doug. But if you bring an unsealed engine to a certified center they will have to tech everything to make sure it meets spec or they are putting their dealership on the line along with a hefty fine.

July 24, 2007 at 1:07 am #58632Rick SchmidtParticipantIt was in the rules that no additives were allowed in the cooling system. I went around giving the heads up to the other Colorado boys about this rule because it never came up in tech as the season went along. Most I warned still had water wetter or RC20 in the kart and changed as we did.
There must have been a small amount in a pocket somewhere and when Scott pulled our water and it had a so slight green tint. He asked me what I had in the radiator and I was honest and told him I drained the RS20 and rinsed with distilled water then refilled, which is exactly what I did.
It is one of those “you’re not kinda pregnant” type things. It was there, I saw it, it is in the rules. We were excluded for the first time since I started racing at age 7. Kinda hurts a little, like being 48 years old and having your first accident. It was a long run and we’ll start over. certainly not flagrant. In hind site, I have a theory. I remember adding the RC20 earlier this year (yes we were illegal all year, as were a lot of others and I’m not naming names) and thinking “ok if a few ounces per gallon is good, 6 or 8 has to be better” Those who know me can understand. That crap was probably caked in every nook and cranny.
I could go off on how tech could have prepared us better this year….and on and on and on. But it was a 1st year series, I think they did a good job considering some growing pains and staffing build ups. We had so much fun in this series. We love the people we race with and everytime we leave one of these races we say that one was the most fun. We have a frigging blast. Win or lose.
Thats why we race! Fun! My water was not legal, tough pill, but I’ll take it. It was my responsibility. I shook Scott’s hand after we packed and thanked him for keeping a level playing field. In my opinion, he could be the best cheater in the karting world if he wanted to be. Thats what it takes to do his job and there is not anyone any better. Guys like me who have no intention of cheating feel some comfort in knowing there is a guy like him keeping the big money out of this. Even though your “you know what” slams shut everytime his eyes are in the direction of your kart. Lol
It is possible that it could have cost us 1st place in the Mile High series this year. Not sure if it’s a local series option for drops or not, have not been able to find much about DQ’s and how they relate to drops in Rmax. Roman is really disapointed, anyone who saw his closure and race craft and how hard he drove would have to be impressed that a racer 18 lbs overweight on a Rotax no less, could have that much drive and desire to be competitve. Hell, they started the race while Roman was being a sportsman and letting outside pole postion catch up after he dropped a full half lap back on the warm up lap, he nearly stopped the field like he did for Jim earlier in the year. Then got stuck on the outside waiting to let him in and got jumped big time. No restart, Didn’t complain. He wants to race. I’m thinking go and he’s thinking “lets race”
Regardless of what decision is made or who makes it. Some good people will benefit from it if were moved off the podium in this years series. We knew we could have stayed home this weekend and not jepordize the championship (2 more days of track time is not going to make or break us) but we wanted race and give the count for Masters as large a group as possible. At least I feel we were the team to beat this year. We worked very hard on our program and the results showed the effort. Jim, Roman and Rod are the men in the class (no offense to others) is has been extremely competitive all season. Thats what we like.

I was willing to seal engines right there at cost of parts only. I also would do it at the shop but I wanted to take it right from tech. That way, the engine was always in either my or the site of the tech director and I would be comfortable with re-sealing without a complete inspection. Once the engine went back to the pits and was out of my site, it is possible that something could have been done to it and at that point, I would do a complete inspection before re-seal.
To those customers I talked with in tech, they had a choice of three things.
1. Send the engine to anyone in the country they wanted and were comfortable with.
2. Re-seal on the spot for the cost of a seal. The racer did the work under my supervision.
3. Re-seal at my shop for parts and nominal fee. I take the engine with me from the track so that it was under my or the tech directors control at all times once the seal was broken.
Wisely, nobody took option 2. Everybody took options 1 or 3.

It was nice to meet Clark. He is a very nice young man. You should be proud. Good luck in a few weeks.

What a blast!! I had been wondering where the carrot is for doing well in our region. I found it in my pants while giving Jim a hug for letting me pass him in the last lap 😛 .
There is just too many people to Thank for the greatest 20 minutes I experianced in karting this weekend.July 24, 2007 at 2:58 pm #58636joescalParticipantI didnt go through tech because I knew I wasnt going to go to Grands even if my rookie a– did get in. This series is too expensive on the national level. Good fun on the club level however. As I said in an earlier post…if Rotax is trying to cater to the average karter then they have priced this series too high. I have heard the same thing over and over again-“I cant afford to go to Grands even if I qualify”. Many folks are in this boat. I am curious to see how many folks are at the grands with a tiny trailer or van.
My hunch is not many. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong but I bet there are more 500K and up rigs then average folks trying to win on a national level.I qualified higher then all previous 3 races. I was only tenths off of the pace and felt great in the races except for my clutch slipping on the formation laps. Anyone else ever have this problem. When the light went green I had no pull until maybe close to the end of the first lap-then everything was great until finish, other then starting about a lap back.
Unless you have a mechanic and some disposable cash this series is very difficult. My place it at the club level and that is fine with me.
As rookie on used mojos I guess I dont have too much to complain about except that it was a ton of fun. Thanks to Jim and Staff-Ed, Caroline, Angie, Matt, Ian and track workers, Ben and all the rest-Thanks for a fun series that seemed to run flawlessly, you guys run a tight ship…I mean Track.
Time to put on the MG’S!!!! oh yeah, and take off 20lbs.!!!!!

Carrot? That happens all the time when I hug Jim too. Whats up with that?

Now Rod, that’s saying something! This may require a moment of silence from our Team. Weren’t you National #2 in some potato pulling class? And this was better? Pretty cool! And I agree with you and what an awesome drive Rod.
July 24, 2007 at 10:51 pm #58639Justin MuellerParticipantJoe, you keep stating in many posts how expensive this rotax national event is Yes to some you may look at it like that but if you really look at what you get when you pay for the national event Tires Gas Food etc it all adds up for what the end result is Please look into what you get for the fee and you will see what you are paying for Hell I cant’ even come play because I have a shifter……..some can do it some can’t that is life If I got to play for 5 days with gas tires etc added in I would save my bucks so I could do it… There will always be other races other events it is all good
