ParticipantI’m sorry to hear that George is not well. George was is always very helpful when I’m at CRE and I enjoy the races there.
Get out of the hospital soon, George!

ParticipantA Rotax will always bog after a spin or when you first leave the pits, so don’t worry about that.
It can vary a bit from engine to engine, but I found that the 2nd clip position was usually best here. The way to check it is to move the needle down to 3rd position then drive on the track and see if the kart accelerates cleanly from slow corners when you roll onto the throttle to accelerate. If it chugs, it’s too rich. If it hesitates then goes, it’s too lean. Go back to the pits and move the needle clip accordingly and repeat the procedure until the kart accelerates cleanly. I always used a K98 needle.
Make sure your main jet is in the ballpark. It can vary by a jet size or so, but a 152 main during summer conditions (7700 alt dens) should work.

ParticipantDrew,
For the first year I raced karts, I put my kart into the back of my Mazda MPV minivan. I had to take off the sidepods, nose, and rear wheels (the hubs stayed on). Fitting all the tools, spare parts, etc. was a bit tricky but once I figured out a workable arrangement, it wasn’t too bad.

ParticipantHi Sheldon,
I’m not an insurance expert, but I have Kaiser health insurance through my job and it covered my expenses when I was injured last year. You probably need to call your insurer and ask about coverage because it probably varies depending on what package you or your employer selected. However, I’ve been racing for a lot of years and I’ve never seen any exclusions related to racing on any of my health insurance policies.

ParticipantI race a Spec Shifter now, but I raced Rotax for several seasons. For IMI, 13/78 is a good starting point.

ParticipantScott,
I was at The Track on Saturday and in those conditions a 152 jet would be OK, though you might have been able to go to a 150.
For TAG Master, 12/77 is a bit tall. Try 12/82 for a starting point. You’ll get more revs everywhere and the engine will pull much better out of the slow corners.

ParticipantSheldon,
My first karting suit was a Sparco Imola. It lasted for 3 seasons before it wore out. The webbing under under the arms gave out after repeated washing and use. I also had the collar replaced after 2 years because it wore where it rubbed against my helmet/neck collar. My wife used Spray ‘n Wash to get grease stains out and that worked pretty well. The suit performed well in protecting me in a crash – no abrasions.

ParticipantRick,
I don’t want to even add up the costs of the trophies – too scary 😯 I doubt I will ever get rid of any of them because I know how much effort, time, and money went into getting each one. And like I said, I like the memories associated with each one – the excitement of the races, the friends who were with me.

ParticipantI’m in favor of trophies. Getting coupons or money is nice, but I tend to use those immediately then forget about them. And for the most part they weren’t valuable enough to really make much of a dent in my expenses. On the other hand, if I look at some of my old trophies (many dating back to the ’70s), they bring back all the good memories of those races. Of course, if the coupons added up to thousands of dollars, it would probably be another story.

ParticipantI dunno. When I got injured last year I was wearing a neck brace. About the only part of me that didn’t hurt was my neck.

ParticipantGreg,
Great pictures. It’s nice to see a creative approach to racing photos.
