I hope to have a kart by then, but if I don’t maybe a rental team.

OTOH, either way, you’re going to need volunteers to help organize and set up aren’t you? I could be pursuaded…:)

    Absolutely astounding!

I’m so glad that Homeland Insecurity is keeping us safe from those viscious Radical Fascist Karting Terrorists. I’m sure I saw one the other day – claimed to be wearing a RibTect vest, but I know it was something else, much more sinister…

Another fine example of the latest and greatest from D.C., proving once again the old adage that you can’t fix stupid.

    Thanks, guys, for your replies.

One other item – what’s the various ratings all about? For example, I see an Alpinestars karting suit w/ “CIK FIA Level 2” indicated, then I see an OMP karting suit with this: “Homologation: CIK-FIA 2001/45/level 1 2001-1 Regulation”.

And, how much do I care about this?

    Thanks – Sheldon

    Sounds very cool.

Would this be appropriate for rookies w/ very limited seat time to-date as well?

Will this be hands on for drivers once at IMI? I’m scrambling, but don’t have that kart yet. Otherwise, I’m assuming it will be BYOK (bring your own kart).?

    Thanks.

After racing a few times at Action Karting and have never been in anything bigger than 13hp karts…. I would love go get a chance to take something out besides the 13hp renters…this year. So,… for now it will be more questions and more dreaming. I am looking to get involved so if anyone knows of events, seminars, training guides etc….

Hello Brad – I’m another rookie – life long auto racing fan, and as of late last summer, recent devotee of karting. Except for a few runs on “real” equipment, courtesy of a couple of guys in the karting community (where the first ride is always free….), I’ve been getting ready to start shelling out for equipment myself. Now that spring is nearly here, I’ve finally begun. Then out on the tracks to get seat time, and maybe a race or two this year (likely in the back, but who cares for now)

ITMT, have also been doing laps in the little rentals, mainly at TTAC, and one charity race last autumn (in the rentals). I’m an “old geezer” from your end of the life span – in my 50’s, but I still think I’m in my 20’s and am always looking for folks to do laps with who are at the same level.

Do go to the Shockwave seminars – I’ve only been able to make it to one, so far, but hope to attend Saturday’s, although the weather guess-cast looks so good I may end up at The Track instead… The folks are very very helpful, both at Shockwave and in the classes.

Do also log in to this forum often, both for info and community. Also attending club races as a spectator is a great experience, and you can learn from talking to the racers as well, although as someone else already alluded to, I’m sure not nearly as good as running in them. Plus there have been some excellent posts re. racing attire and equipment you’ll need, etc. (see the Newbie forum – I’d posted some time back on that and received some very helpful, and detailed, responses)

As a fellow rookie, I’m always happy to share what little I know and to talk karting as well.

Re. events, etc. I’d like to see a rookie rumble, (although that could easily deteriorate into something like the Keystone Cops Do Karting). 🙂

What, if anything, do you have so far?

Roman…. His latest helmet has less peripheral ability. I like it better, he has been coached to look ahead. Drivers who turn to look behind them have picked up a bad habit. (you know it’s true Aj) The fast way around the track is in front of you and there is still plenty of view to see a challenge for a pass. Roman likes it better too. Plus, you should feel where competitors are around you. …

Howdy all – I’m finally starting to get some gear; was looking at Bell helmets @ AAI on Lamar in Arvada the other day.

The two I was looking at were the K-1 Sport (http://www.bellracing.com/productdetail.asp?sec=product&catid=4&prodid=16) and the BR-1 (http://www.bellracing.com/productdetail.asp?sec=product&catid=4&prodid=46). Both in similar price range, abt. $400.

The K-1 has what they tell me is a “standard” port size, whereas the BR-1 has the bigger one. How much diff. does eyeport size really make? Subjectively, I like being able to look around more, but OTOH, as a rookie, I’m listening carefully to perspectives of the Experienced Ones, like Rick, above. Other thoughts?

The K-1 seemed to be quite a bit more compact/less bulky, which I liked, but that’s a separate factor. Am waiting for them to get in a large to try on, so don’t know re. fit yet (medium seemed to have pressure points)

Later on if I don’t fall off the kart too often and want to keep running it might be nice to get a pretty paint job. Also, any diff. between black and white in terms of “paintability”?

Finally, re. overal sizing: I understand from this forum and other infor. that the helmet shouldn’t move around much (at all?). Although couldn’t “A”/”B” between medium and large in the same model, even a Med. (K-1) moved around some, but seemed there was too much pressure on parts of my noggin, the large (the BR-1) was much more comfortable, seemed to fit firmly to my head overall, but I could somewhat readily rock it forward and back on my head and somewhat from side to side (yaw). I don’t know how much play/movement is too much…. ??

    Thanks!

Dohhhh!!!! Sounds like it was even better than I’d thought. So sorry I couldn’t attend. I’d just called a few days earlier to reserve; I’m registered for all of them but have had a sick little feline racer on my hands.

Thanks to all who posted! I’ve got my work cut out for me gathering all this stuff together. Hopefully there will still be time/money left to get out on the track after all this?

There are so *many worthy causes that might be of interest – animals, kids, poverty, environmental, etc. But please let me know, you guys, if you’d like me to find out more about the domestic abuse charity I mentioned in an earlier posting.

Troy – This information about driver attire, costs and related links is just super!! Thanks also for the additional detailed info re. tools and equipment via PM.

I seem to recall meeting you at The Track or IMI ??? I’ve met a bunch, but still trying to put names and faces in the same memory bank.

Howdy – A few days before the server change somebody posted here about 3 storage facilities near The Track, as I recall. I followed w/ a question asking for details, as I’m fixin’ to get a darn kart, TTAC is my favorite track, but have no place to store a kart.

So, anything available on facilities names, addresses, rental rates, etc.?

    Thanks!

Although I don’t have a kart yet, dang, I’ve been following the local club racing for a few months now and have had the privilege of meeting a few of you guys/gals as I’ve attended events and/or been chugging around The Track in my little rentals. Just wanted to mention I think the charitable angle is a cool idea, especially at this “giving” time of year.

If kids related, I know someone who is on a board for a local kids domestic abuse related NPO that is currently trying to improve fundraising and would likely appreciate such an opportunity. If that part of it flies, let me know and I can look into her NPO some more.

Thanks for the info, gang. Sounds very cool. Although I see on their site that some no-count British kid named Lewis Hamilton, who never went anywhere in racing, participated in 2000 (10/29 piece on their news page). 🙂
