Supposedly they went down the list and asked in order if a guy wanted to go. I really wonder if that happened. The big question, did they ask Kyle?

The DD2 engine package is roughly $4,000 retail and is complete. No additional parts need to be purchased.

The 4 cycles are $4,600 to $4,800 retail and need some additional parts such as radiator, mounts, hoses and such. Comparable packages are at least $5,000 to $5,500 onces all parts a factored in.

The DD2 requires no maintenance on a regular basis. A change of transmission oil every 10 hours and regular cleaning of the power valve are the extent of maintenance. The motor should go at least 50 hours before it needs the top end serviced. That is more than a year for most karters. There is no chain to service.

The 4 cycle will need at least the chain serviced every race weekend (if not every time on track) and replacement every other weekend, just like a normal 2 cycle chain operated engine.

When it comes to regular maintenance, Stuff that needs to be done every race weekend, the DD2 will be less than the 4 cycles.

Everyone talks about speed, how fast? At IMI where there are no slow corners, things are very different than at tracks that have slow corners. At Grand Junction, our FR-125 (standard Rotax) was faster than all but two of the 4 cycles. We were pulling better off the slow corners, they were faster on top. Of course, driver may have had more than a little to do with that. Both engines have roughly the same hp, 34. But the DD2 has a high/low gear box. It will pull out of slow corners better than 4 cycle. At a track like The Track, the DD2 will have a clear advantage.

I did some searching for times at the Track comparing the DD2 with the 4 cycles. On any given day, the DD2’s were on average significantly quicker (usually around 1 second). The majority of the 4 cycles were in the 55 second range, the DD2 in the 54’s. AJ did have a best of 53.954 but I could find no other driver to get in the 54’s. The best for a DD2 was Kyle with a 53.0.

The DD2 heavy class that The Track will run next year is intended to be a true masters class of 35 and up.

There will be a Rotax program next year, Jim with The Track will have the details once he firms them up.

Next year, The Track at Centennial will be running a Masters DD2 class. It will be a true Masters, class, with 35 the minimum age. Weight will be 420#. The class will run with the regular DD2 class, scored seperatly. Personally, I think this class is an excellent choice for the over 35 gentleman or lady who is looking for more power and speed but not the violent ride of a shifter. This package is almost as fast as a stock moto shifter and is faster than the 4 cycles (same power but with a gear box).

The cost of a DD2 package is $1,000 to $1,200 less than any of the current 4 cycles when you include the radiator and mounts. The DD2 comes with a warranty backed by one of the largest companies in the world of recreational engines. For most racers, this package will be far less maintenance than just about any kart engine, mainly due to the drive system the DD2 offers (no chain). We have seen a tremendous amount of interest with several engines sold this fall. The other thing that is good for DD2 drivers is that the rules package is world wide and has been stable for several years.

By the way, 6’1″ is not too tall for a standard chassis. My son Greg is 6’2″ and we use a standard kart for him. An extended porch is not really necessary until the driver is in the 6′ 4″ range.

We have modified several karts for tall and/or big men over the years. The last one we did, the gentleman was 6’4 and 260#. We just build an extended porch to give your legs more room to move. Give us a call. 303-781-7829

For RMax, you must use the Rotax rad. TaGUSA rules use to allow for a change in rad but no longer. So for racing, if you are going by TagUSA or RMaX, you have to use the standard Rotax rad. We have them in stock if you need one.

If you are just going to play with it, put on it what ever you want. The internal water pump will handle just about any rad fine. We use to switch for Tag and did so many times with zero problems.

Take the rad cap off. Pull the bottom hose from your rad and drain from there. You can also pull the lower hose from the engine if you want. Leave the hose off after draining so that if some water that is left in does freeze, it has some where to expand into, not break expensive parts.

Many guys do run anti-freeze in winter. Some tracks won’t allow it in any weather, some do. Check with the track you intend to practice. In general, most racing series do not allow anti-freeze in the coolant during race weekends.

On our karts, we are just in the habit of draining and filling coolant from now until spring.

There is a Micro Max package. However, testing showed that it was slower than a K80 with poor throttle response. Barry, Jim and I have been talking about doing some testing to find a happy medium between Mini and Micro. The goal is to have 10hp with good throttle response. I have a smaller restricter here that I will be giving to Barry for testing.

The MiniMax is a great package and unless you have some unfortunate circumstances, you should run all season with little to no problems. I can’t comment on the Jr1 Honda package as none of my customers ran them extensively and I have no personal experience with them.

Hopefully this winter won’t be a crazy as last. It seems we got nothing done last winter but worked every day. I would love to come over this winter and do something like what we did last time. Only this time we got a shop to work out of!!!!!!! I’ll call you once we get an idea of the schedules and set something up.

The dealer for Italkart is in the process of closing their doors. I’m sure they have many of the common parts still in stock at cost or below. Don’t let that discourage you. Any of the dealers in town can get you parts if needed. Most of the components are SKM and almost every dealer handles some SKM parts. In addition, most of the common stuff, hubs, wheels, axles, steering parts are common to all brands and will interchange. Welcome to the group.
