ParticipantThe problem to the Sonik issue is that under the sonik website, they officially list the Sonik as a fun motor, no act of TaG implemented. The folks at TaG USA were generous enough to see the potential for the Sonik as a TaG specific engine, but w/o the manufacturer giving support to the program, it would be almost imposible to be able to govern the motor. The leopard and the biland were specific TaG motors (even though the biland was supposed to have a spec series) I would not be surprised if the sonik guys realize the issue and get it resolved due to an increase of interest into the motor itself, further more, my concern about the sonik is that just because it won the supernationals, does NOT deam it any differant from the other TaG packages, each motor has its areas of magic, and flaws, keep in mind that second was a Parilla, and thirld was a Biland (which led the race for a few laps) I belive that each TaG motor (if legalized) will be just as good as the next, in all the TaG races i have ever seen with a distinct variance in motor selection, each motor does something the other does not. The second race in GJ had proof that each motor was just as good as the next, a Leopard won both races as well as qualified first, a rotax qualified second only 3 hundreths off, a Biland had the fastest race time, A Sonik was in third for a while, i belive (not so sure) that senior was all rotax on the podium, and 2 bilands and 1 leopard on the JR podium. In the Masters race in Las Vegas, a Leopard won, with 3 consecutive bilands (i think) with a Colorado driver in fifth in a Sonik. No Rok’s or Italisistems competeded that i know of, a comer did, it was fast but did not finish in SR, Sr was as we all know, won by a Sonik, Parilla, Biland, Biland, and a Biland in top 5. I personally think that each TaG motor with the correct weight differential will be as competitive as the next becuase they all were designed as a purpose of low maintance and good power, next year will show (this being a personal prediction) that the driver and chassis will make the differnce in TaG accross the nation, not motor, people all over the world want tag to be up to the driver, not the engine, so you know that strides will be made to make that as possible as can be achieved.

ParticipantNo it has power, depends on how you gear it, tune the exhaust, and drive it. If you are good to it, it is good to you. No one should say it has no power through the turns when most leopards were passing 4+ people at a time in vegas, myself and many more included (yes bilands were passed by us through the turns) THat flex piple makes a BIG difference also.

ParticipantJeff, a Sonik revs up to 18000+, 15000 is where you will get 20+hours on a piston if you do not exceed the 15k mark. The IAME Parilla boys recomend that 15k be the maximum rev that the leopard goes for the long life deal. The leopard manuel shows ratios that had the engine in excess of 17500, it is your choice to rev the motor to the moon, there is no need to unless its racing time to rev an engine like that. To bring this into perspective, I believe all TaG motors but the Vortex and Rotax do not have restrictions before , the revs are your choice. The Leopard does not require you to run that high to be competitive, if you have only enough gear to get to 15000, it will still be super competitive, just not in the corners, but it will haul down that straightaway like it has boosters. The Sonik has more top end down the straight, the only definite experiance I have w/ a Sonik was at IMI on a test day, the driver in the Sonik was probably 20+lbs lighter than me and tuned a little better, even with race weight, I still would kill the thing in the corners, but he would always pass me on the straights. If i wanted extreme overkill, I could do the same, but its only testing. In my opinion, the best “TaG” motors are the Leopard due to the popularity, parts, service and great power (not to mention the almost zero battery maintanace) and the Sonik because it is basically an ICA with a battery and 18 more CCs. Plus no silly seal for both, if the Sonik had more dealers in the USA, it would be a more popular package.

ParticipantRich, Chaz speaks the truth, Rotax was untimatly a numbers game. The best of the best will not be rotaxers at all. TaG SR will have both TaG champions, a Sr Heavy Champion, and probably more in the way of talent. You will see the majority on leopards and bilands on the podium (numbers gane) and some spectacular racing. Chaz can vouch for me when i say the best will not be on rotaxes. If Buckley races a rotax in the CSC, he may be the only one that poses a threat for a TaG motor due to raw talent

ParticipantLeopard or Biland, I heard from someone in RI this year that the Italistem is a POS, and they break and all that. As for the weight issue, the 380 at bandimere, that is for JR’s running the SR package, for you, 390 is the state requirement for SR leopard weight. The 415 Itaisistem is for SR’s probably also. A buddy of ours bought a leopard last summer, he was at 200 lbs body weight (with a Parolin Le-Mans chassis, its a heavier setup) he still added like 15lbs, so I think you would be ok, but its your choice.
