Wow, that’s impressive. Not looking to set any records, just have fun and not break anything. Doug, not sure if you are coming out tomorrow. If so I’ll see you there. If not have a great father’s day.

Holy crap, if memory serves me right there weren’t many of the shifters in the 52’s, that’s really fast. Rodney, I will impress myself if I can get out of the kart without help after 20 laps 😀

    Hey Scott,

Glad I didn’t offend you as I seemed to offend others and it wasnt the intent. Totally understand the time issues. I’m calling in the fathers day card to do the race on Sunday (since I’m the father). No practice today, instead I’m taking the boys up to Frisco to go to the BBQ challenge. I figured 2 full days at the track is too much to ask of them.

Trust me I don’t confuse the indoor track with outdoor karting. They both take skill but it’s a different type of driving. With that said I love indoor karting, and I have to say there doesnt seem to be any drama there. I took Austin up to Bandimere and we drove 10 laps on a leapord. When we were done he said “dad that was the most fun thing I have ever done”, since he as done a lot of fun things that was a pretty big comment. I was shocked with the speed of the kart. I did do one race in a Rotax (before my big crash at the 2001 supernationals), and I remember the rotax being slow out of the corners with lots of top speed, but the leapord pulled pretty hard through the entire range. I drove a direct drive once and it kind of reminded me of that. It also seemed like the motor could explode at any time. Of course I’m an old gear slammer and feel very comfortable with the thought of a stock moto.

I’ll probably come out to watch the race at the track the weekend of the 27th to watch. I’d like to get your take on what might be a good class for me to look at IF I end up getting back into karting. I’m going to PM you my contact info, if you want you can PM me your contact info back.

If something comes up and I don’t see you on the 27th, good luck at the grands.

    Hi Russ,
I think we met at PPIR, dont know your kart racing history other than that your a Hot Shot at some Mickey Mouse indoor track and now wants to try the real thing against the best competition. In which case forget this weekend at IMI, instead put in 200 practice laps at The Track get into the 55s, turn up next week -end, slide in the back door kick the shit out of everyone, make a name for yourself. If only it was that easy.
Dont be throwing $$$$ at Scott, he dont need it. Throw it my way so I can race him on equal terms.

    Gunter

Hi Gunter, thanks for the response. Just to be clear, not trying to “make a name for myself” or kick the shit out of anyone. I just met Scott a few times at the mickey mouse track and thought he was a nice guy and it would be fun to race against him. I think I was pretty clear in original post I have no illusions of victory. I watched him “kick the shit” out of everyone at the race I at the track and just want to know if I am 1, 2 or 5 seconds slower then him. If you run 55’s at the track I’ll make the same offer to you, come on up this weekend and I will cover your costs. As for next weekend, I don’t even own a kart. I have run a few hundred laps at IMI when I was racing shifters but that was almost 10 years ago (before the track even opened). I have done the rentals at the track and it seems like an awesome track. Definitely more technical then IMI, so frankly not having been in a “real kart” in a long time it’s a bit intimidating.

I’ve always tried to race against the best, even thought they almost always beat up on me. My very first kart race I was lapped by Alex Barron (who was a karting hot shoe in Southern California at the time). When he went on to race Indy Cars it was cool to say “hey I raced against that guy….of course he lapped me….” What seems to ruin karting is that everyone wants to win, so when they don’t win they come up with a new class, old guys, fat guys etc (PS I am both old and fat). That’s not my thing. If I show up on Sunday and there is nobody to race against in the master’s class, then I will race in the senior class. I know Sabre is fast so I guess I can measure myself against her.

Not sure why you were so offended by my post, and I’m not trying to get in the middle of anyone’s shit. I know some of the SKUSA guys from 10 years ago, and I just met Jim yesterday, Jim seemed really friendly and knowledgable, and is even pulling together numbers for a new kart for me. I live in Highlands Ranch so the Track is definitely very convienent, and as you noted I spend a lot of time at Speed Raceway, not to be a hot shot, but to spend some fun time with my sons. I would have no reservations doing a race at the track, once I am a bit more seasoned.

So let’s be clear, I don’t pretend to be anything other then a guy who likes to drive. I used to be a decent driver, but that was a long time ago, and some of the best races I ever had were in the mid or even back of the pack. I’m too old for any kind of bullshit, and if I make a “name for myself” for anything I hope it would be for being a nice guy and a great dad.

    Peace out,
    Russ

PS Gunter not trying to offend you, have no idea who you are (sorry if we met at PPIR I am very bad with names). If you are a good person to “bench mark” against come on up. Otherwise (if I end up with a kart), hopefully we can meet up and have some good clean races at whatever track, and I have no problem if you kick the shit out of me, as long as when we are done racing you realize I’m just a clean racer, and a nice guy.

OK, I have a kart from the good folks at GJMS. Robert find me on Sunday and I’ll share what I ended up paying as I’m not sure that Stacey wants me posting the details.

I will be running in either the TAG Senior or Master’s Class dependent upon how many people show up. Which brings me to the next point……..come on out guys and gals, I want some people to race against (Besides Sabre who I watched at Pikes Peak and I’m just hoping she doesn’t lap me!)

    See you Sunday

FYI, I’d rather pay a little more and get something fairly current if possible. This is a test for me to see if I want to jump back into karting full time.

All I can say is WOW!!!

I have not been active in karting for a number of years, but I was around in the “GloryDays” of SKUSA, I did a few promoto events and a few supernationals. I heard that SKUSA was coming back to Colorado and I decided to check it out, and even told Curt (whom I had never met before) that I could help out if I needed. I was impressed with the people putting on the event when I met them, but I figured that as a first event, at a brand new venue, with a temporary track, that there would be some glitches. I was there all weekend and I have to say it was one of the best organized karting events that I have ever seen. It brought back a lot of memories of how well SKUSA events were run, and reminded me of a national level event. You could set your watch to the schedule, there were excellent corner workers in EVERY CORNER, beautiful facilities including the nicest restrooms I have ever seen at a karting race, a national level tech director, and perhaps best of all fantastic racing on track and smiles all around off track. It made me want to get back in the seat and start kart racing again.

For those of you who missed it you should plan on attending the next event. If I can figure out how to get a kart together I might just see you on the track. Watch out Micheal Schumacher I might be gunning for you next November in Vegas!

Great job SKUSA Mountain Region Crew!!!!

Do you still have a kart?

yep, don’t know if I can still drive it. I think if the forecast is in the low 90’s I might try my hand at it thought.
