ParticipantI just got back from vacation and saw the new IMI TaG weights. At the risk of sounding self-serving, I just wonder why no weight was added to the Soniks. The last 2 CSC TaG Master races were extremely close, the closest races of the day according to many spectators who talked to me. From where I sat the differences between the Rotaxes and the Soniks came down more to chassis setup than motors. We passed and repassed each other several times at different places on the track so I didn’t see any major Rotax lap speed advantage – certainly nothing that justifies adding 10 lbs. If there is any one advantage anyone has, it’s that the Soniks are WAY quicker on the starts. The Rotax cannot stay with them at all until we get up to speed. At the last IMI CSC TaG Master race, the 2 Soniks jumped the front row on each start. So, there is more to performance than just HP or power to weight ratio, the engine power characteristics matter, too, and the Sonik has an advantage there.

ParticipantLets be honest, the Rotax got added weight because Greg and Seth drive them too fast.

InactiveTruth be told, the weight got added because the Rotax is kicking the Bilands ass.

InactiveThe only thing the added weight did for my brother was bring the rest of the rotaxes closer to his weight. :sun:

ParticipantRich,
How is it Barry’s fault that Bill broke, things happen that are sometimes no ones fault, Barry is one anal dude about preperation, and rarely, if ever does his stuff break.August 15, 2005 at 10:16 pm #51462Anonymous
InactiveI think Rich is just kidding.
95d suffered from a really odd mechanical failure: the rod snapped in the middle. It looked like it must’ve been a defect. or something. Bill did get a special view of the rest of the race, however, stranded on the circuit. 😯

InactiveThanks Jeff!
I sure as heck was ribbing Barry! Barry is one of the many good guys in Colorado Karting!

ParticipantStandard excuses in karting
1. Its the tuners fault.
2. The other guys motor is a cheater.
3. The other guy punted me off.
4. The officals didn’t see it.
5. The tech director is out to get me.Know any more?

ParticipantDoug,
That is a pretty bold statement. You don’t think that it may be in reaction to the OVERALL dominance of the Rotax at IMI.
Charles,
The Rotax is the engine to have at IMI. If the Sonik’s advantage is only at the start of the race and the Rotax is good everywhere other than the start how on earth is this an advantage for the Sonik overall. As Roman demonstrated, he overcame the start and walked away with the win. My only advantage at the start was to be in front and get in the way for about half the race. I know you and Mike can attest to this. 😀

Participant:idn: What are the weghts for Steamboat is rotax still at 395 and junior at 320. I need to know so I can get the kart scaled if there is a change. If changes are being made then the process seems screwed by late season chages. I disagree with Rich on the tires of course he is faster than I am so his tire wear is more. Slow down and save your tires. I wouldn’t buy tires early this year till we make a decision but early rules would be great especially if changes are being made. It makes my wife’s Christmas shopping harder not knowing the rules.

At the two CSC races at IMI, the majority of the racers in Tag senior have been Rotaxs. At one, I think it was 9 of 14. Besides Seth and Greg, which one of the other Rotaxes has been dominate? If were just motor, I think one of the other Rotaxs would be up there too.
As was clearly demonstrated to me this past week at Red Bull, even with identically prepared karts, there was almost .9 second difference in the final 16 qualifying times. Many of these kids had extensive national experience and were very accomplished racers and there was still that much disparity.
Yes, I think the decision to add weight to the Rotax is clearly a reaction to two fast kids and most definetly the CSC should not follow suit.
I predict that in a few weeks when we debut our new chassis line with a stock moto and Greg is ripping around IMI in the mid 52s, we are going to hear the exact same crap about cheater motors, unfair advantage 😥 and on and on it goes.

ParticipantMid 52’s are more then achievable in a stock moto, done it before in the winter, I would not be surprised to see lower times when faster drivers get into the class, like greg, doug s, etc.

ParticipantWeights will not change for CSC this late in the season.
Brad modified the weights for the IMI club races in order to get feedback and get a feel for what may be best for next season.
We know there will be changes next season but some of the proposed ones seem not to have been thought out nor backed with facts.
At least we will have real info to compare different motors instead of speculation.Rusty

ParticipantIt was obvious to me that the weight changes for Jr and senior TAG were in the right direction, masters I don’t know yet. I also know from working with a Leopard for two days last week, with and without the restricted header, that the exhaust restricter at our altitude and at my track does very little to change the performance and lap times for the juniors. I still think there is more to do to make the racing more competitive between the different engines at my track and for every track that runs TAG.
I changed the weights for this year because I have known long before this year that the weights were not right for my track. I just wish I had done something sooner rather than later.
I don’t understand why SKUSA won’t change anything during the race season, they should at least allow the CSC to make adjustments for the different tracks and address the junior TAG weights overall for all tracks. In the beginning of the year they say it is too soon make any adjustments without having more information and then when we are near the end of the season it is to late to make any changes. If they had been making adjustments all along we would be done with it by now. How can you figure anything out if you leave it the same all year? We all know that the weights are not right for every track and that the weights overall need adjusting. Having every junior engine at the same weight is a oversite on their part or a lack of any real testing from the beginning.
Only a few of the Rotax drivers have figured out the proper combination of parts for the carb that brings the engine to life, most are using the stock setup. Maybe Doug would be nice enough to explain what they have done with their carb setup and explain how those changes have affected the performance over the stock setup. It is tough to make changes to the weights for the Rotax when there is such a difference in carb setup and gear ratio between everyone.
My only objective is to try and get more parity between engines so that it does not become a one or two engine class, which is what is happening in Jr and senior for sure. Rich Vito was the only one who said the weight changes did not work for him so we will have to see.
You can expect more changes for TAG from me, every race if necessary to get it right. I will be in Italy this next week and will miss the race this weekend but I still may make more adjustments for this weeks race.
