ParticipantThe better driver will want the 50, the average driver should use the 40.

ParticipantCan you expand on that?

InactiveDoug can correct me if I’m wrong and I’m sure he can add to this as well, but a 50mm will provide more grip, but driver needs to know how to use the added grip to their advantage.
The biggest thing I noticed in switching from 40 to 50 was the extra grip coming out from the apex off of the corner, you can pick up the throttle earlier and get a better drive off. But you have to be more precise when you set the front end into the corner, you only really have one shot. If you don’t set it right and have to adjust mid corner you will loose any advantage you are gaining and then some, as soon as you unload the front of the kart it will just want to go straight.
A 40mm kart is more forgiving to drive, as you don’t have to be as precise with your steering imputs and the kart is more tolerable of mid corner adjustments.

ParticipantDane hit it exactly on the head. No question the 50 is faster. But the driver has to be better to take advantage of it or he/she/it will actually be slower. The 40 is better for newer drivers as it has a wider tuning window and is more forgiving to mistakes.

Wow, and i’ve got a freshly rebuilt rotax (top and bottom) kart for sale. Glad it’s got a seal on it… 8)
Hey Mike, you may want to hang on to that thing and come and do the Grands. 😯 Oppps, I’m sorry I forgot. At the Grands they do a lot of racing. 3 heat races, an LCQ, a pre-final and a 25 lap main.
Just kidding Mike

InactiveGreat news, I can see it already, band in the infield, and the pond full of water with a giant yacht (sp) floating for the VIP area.
Guess I will have to dig my Rotax out and come and play.

ParticipantDoug,
I’m working on my “spin & win” move for next year. I’ve got the full laps all figured out now. I called the Book in Vegas and they aren’t taking bets on me next year NOT FINISHING 8)

InactiveTrue Colors of the Colorado Racing Community 👿 are sure Shiny on this Forum. I usually keep quite about most subjects on the forum but enough is enough. The state of Colorado finally has an opportunity to represent a National Event, and people are already embarrassing us with their outlaw ways of WINNING! My son David and I have participated in the Rotax Max Challenge since 2002 and up to date we have never had our Service technician Blue Print our fr125 Rotax engine. This is unheard of! The Rotax Max Challenge is the best organization in Karting and believe me they will not tolerate any Outlaws in their playing field. I highly recommend any new Rotaxians to read the Rotax Rules before purchasing a Rotax license.

ParticipantMaybe one other person knows what you are talking about, Harry. Better enlighten the rest of us after a post like that. If you are saying something that I think you are saying, the implications are huuuuuuge. Hope you have proof.
Angie, new thread?

InactiveI received an e-Mail from Joe Ramos Jr. and it went something like this, “dyno testing” engines goes against what Rotax is all about – this is a spec, sealed engine program. This sounds very familiar to our South Florida friends and it will not be tolerated on the West Coast.
The Rotax community will be watching Colorado very closely this year.

ParticipantKirk, it probably should be a new thread…. unfortunately I can’t easily move just a couple of posts in a thread.
I guess now we may need a Mile High Challenge topic under the discussion list.
thank you all for being kind to one another…. thinking through and rereading your posts before sending! :peace

ParticipantHarry, I have never met you but I am assuming you are refering to Doug’s post on checking jetting characteristics wrt the Maxjet/weatherpod suggested carb settings via a dyno. I am assuming you are confusing that with your statement “up to date we have never had our Service technician Blue Print our fr125 Rotax engine.”
Please do not compare this with the “problem” in FL, two totally different things.
I hope all of the Rotax community along with all karters everywhere “watch Colorado closely.” All they will find is a great group of racers and shops playing within the rules.

ParticipantAs we all know, jetting is critical on getting the best from a Rotax. Surprise, that’s not one bit different from any other engine on the market. We all use MaxJet software to set our jetting but I was interested in finding out just how accurate it was for my motor. Now I could have spent a couple of days at the track burning up tires but never really knowing for sure if I had it right or not.
So I spent a couple of bucks with a dyno to check out where my MaxJet numbers were. In less than 1 hour, I found the answer. It is off by two jet sizes. The motor ran fine at the recommended settings but I did find that if we went 2 jets sizes smaller, we found a slight boost in power. I only suggested using the dyno because you can get accurate answers quickly and economically.
What happened in Florida was entirely different. There we had a dealer who sorting cylinders and selling the “best” for thousands of dollars. What I suggested some racers may want to do would make me exactly zero dollars, none, nada, zippo. If you followed my suggestion, all it would have done is made YOU faster. I have had people come to me and ask for a different cylinder and my answer is why? There’s nothing there. Its a waste of money to try and sort parts. Better to spend the time at the track working on driving.
My whole goal is to make every racer in this state as fast as I can whether you bought your kart from me or not. To that I’m offering a FREE seminar on prepping your kart and learning how to maintain it. Part of it will be what a guy should do to prepare for a national level event. If that makes us an “Outlaw”, well then call the sheriff. we’re guilty.
I’ve only setup karts at 35 different tracks around the country. I don’t know everything but I do know a bit. If you don’t want access to that info for FREE, then I guess you can do what ever you want.
