For the lazy- Austin Texas
May 25, 2010 at 7:36 pm #63902David FedlerParticipantDidn’t see that coming…
I hope we don’t get a flat, wide, “stadium” road course that is boring when there are a lot of tracks in this country (Road America, Laguna Seca, etc.) that would be much more interesting. And let’s hope no taxpayer dollars go into building it…
Oh well, if they can manage to build something interesting (maybe in the Hill Country), that would be one more track within a reasonable distance…
May 25, 2010 at 11:58 pm #63903Jon RomeneskoParticipantWow! And a purpose built track, at that! We all know that means it will blow any and all facilities currently in the US out of the water (in terms of amenities, that is). I’m with David (hope it’s not a boring stadium track), but even if it is…who cares, F1 IS COMING BACK!. π Hopefully they put some imagination into the track and include some unique features & elevation changes. My personal pick for an F1 venue would have been Road America, but that dream would have never happened (too narrow, not enough runoff, no mega garages, its in farmtown, Wisconsin, etc…). Followed by Miller, Road Atlanta, Laguna, and Watkins Glen, but a purpose built track should be very cool!
Can’t wait to see the layout. When can i Buy tickets?! :loony: I propose a Colorado Karters road trip.

May 26, 2010 at 8:32 pm #63905[email protected]ParticipantBoy, ain’t this something?
I was raised near Road America, and my vote’s been there since the mid ’60s. But there’s just too may places on that track that would need huge modifications, some impossible (The Kink), and those “improvements” would ruin the place for spectating β so I’m actually glad it’s not going there. The spectating was already compromised in the early ’90s from CART’s insurance providers, but it’s still great. The vintage race there is fabulous, though, and easy to pretend it’s “real” β highly recommended.
Been to Road Atlanta 13 times, fabulous track but similar shortcomings, and I went to 3 GPs at the Glen in the late 70s and it too isn’t up to code. Miller’s not good for spectating, nor spectators, we had such a bad experience there they’re now offering free tickets β and I still don’t want to go back. Montreal is loads of fun (had a photo credential, not sure what it’s like without that), Phoenix was too, Long Beach not so much….. but Indy was really something, being the Brickyard and all.
So Austin it is! Can’t wait to see the layout, we’ll be there. Hoping it’s a real track, not another Tilghe generic. This is GREAT NEWS!
May 26, 2010 at 8:33 pm #63906Cris SchuremanParticipantNow it makes sense
A day after the sudden announcement that one of the worldβs highest-profile sporting events is heading to Austin, more details are emerging, including a $25 million-per-year state government incentive offer.
On Tuesday, Formula One World Championship Ltd., Formula One Administration Ltd. and Austin-based promoter Full Throttle Productions LP announced the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix will be held in Austin from 2012 to 2021.

Miller may have set the :money too high. It is one of the best facilities in the world, and I think they know it.
