I don’t know if there was ever any speedway karting here in Denver. But thankyou for posting the picture. It brought back some memories of my own.

I grew up in Wichita Ks, where my father raced karts on dirt ovals when I was a young kid. He raced at dirt speedways around Wichita and at least one karting specific dirt oval that I can remember. I can’t recall the kart specifics as I was very young. He was probably racing untill I was about 8 or 9, he put the kart down after a pretty bad crash at a speedway one night. I’ll have to contact my step-mother to see if she can recall the class or kart package as he passed several long years ago.

I’m new to karting, haven’t even picked up the kart I bought at the benifit yet, but his memory and the good times he/we had were one of the things that helped to finalize my decision to get into the sport. I can remember getting chucked into his lap by my step mom at 4 or 5 for a celebration lap after a victory, one of my fondest memories about him.

Funny thing about your picture is that my dad also ran the number 16. It was his favorite number.

Anyways, sorry about the book, but thanks for bringing back memories.

    Great pic Brian!

Looks like a hoot with those tires out there exposed. Hey, where are your feet?

    I have 5 acres we aren’t using.
come on over and we will grade out an oval. 50 cents a lap. We even have restrooms and a couple of showers. We can pile up some timbers for bleechers. How about a dirt road course as well. Does anybody have a road grader? 😀

Brian that is a really great picture- Thru your helmet I can see you grinnig from ear to ear.

I’ve raced alot of different karts over the years and enjoyed all of them. Speedway karting was awesome. Why isn’t anyone doing something @ IMI? I see they race micro’s and other things there.@Rick Schmidt wrote:

You really had to be precise when throwing it in under someone. My right foot down, left foot….. who cares!

#16 is my family number. Grandpa and Great uncle were pretty successful running that number Waaaaay back when in sprint, midget, and championship cars. Welcome to karting. Sounds like you got a great deal and the money is going to a great cause. That is the true spirit of this sport/hobby/life that has kept me addicted for over 24 years or so.

    Brian,

Was that Ascot Raceway in Gardena, CA? Wow, I grew up in Gardena but never went there (my parents were definitely not into racing, so neither was I back then)–I had no idea they raced karts there. Got married and moved away in ’76 and thought the track got gobbled up by urban growth not long after?

They are. Or tried to anyway.
My daughter ran a dirt race in AZ last summer and fell in love with it!
A couple of us got a few KidKarts and Jr Briggs out to IMI to run the Sat. night dirt races, but just couldn’t get the class going on a regular basis. I don’t know if they are going to run that series again this year or not, but we’ll be there if they do.
The Berthoud MX track also has a dirt oval that will let us run with the Micros, quads, and bikes if we want. They usually run on Sunday afternoons.
I’ve heard of some running exhibition races at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, and someone trying to put together a group to race in rodeo arenas at county fairs.

I thought the final race seven of the CSC was going to be at IMI’s dirt oval? 😛
The 4 stroke TAGs is what dirt karting needs. At least this dirty karter thinks so.

    Rod / Brian,

We need a special chassis for doing this? Or can we just pick up one of Brads older ones to beat on? Would this require a jack shaft Rodney?

These new generation 4-strokes would be really cool in one of these.

I wish they would televise the Chili Bowl Kart races.

Unfortunately like everything else, I would assume a offset chassis is the call these days. Unlike the days of having one kart for dirt, sprint and long tracks.

Speedway karting has morphed into briggs, full body, “door slammer” type racing
(not my thing). The speedway karting I enjoyed was open-wheeled, two-stroke bliss! Although Brad’s 4-stroke TaG engines would be a blast. I would be interested in doing a 2-stroke class if one was offered. It would be cool to have some classes locally that resembled what guys are racing at the Tulsa Shootout (big kart race prior to the Chilli Bowl)

Or maybe I’m just having winter time dreams.

The easiest way to get more than one or two racers to do it would be to utilize all the sprint chassis’s we all ready have around here. I don’t know if a jack shaft would be needed, only one way to find out. Wasn’t the Bug a straight rail sprint kart as well?
I think the winner of the open karts at the Tulsa shoot out was using the new rotary motor with some mods.
Karts are like women, I love them all, I just don’t have the time nor money to do em all .
VKE probably knows where and when most of the Colorado kart dirt races are.
The best group of dirt racers I keep an eye on are called The Unlimited All stars, they have deveolped a good set of rules that are speading nation wide that allow about anything to be raced together. Check them out on http://www.4cycle.com It’s not a class of stock briggs racers.
