ParticipantHelmets w/ the spoiler on them are designed for open cockpit racing. Anti lift of the helmet.

InactiveThere are two current theories about the origination of the helmet lip. Me being a non-kart driver 😥 thought it was to hold the racer?s gum during the warm-up lap. But I have done considerable research into this matter and here are the two possible inventors with the reasons for the lip.
1. NASCAR wanted a convenient way for a driver (Robby Gordon) to give another driver (Michael Waltrip) his helmet during a caution. When said driver would fling the helmet to the oncoming driver the lip provided a stable flight path and give added catch area. Thus Michael Waltrip wouldn?t need to take his 3800 pound car and swerve to attempt to catch Robby?s helmet. However, NASCAR was concerned that crew chiefs would find a way to stiffen the helmet like Odd Job?s hat and the helmet would then become a weapon.
2. A hyper-competitive father taught his Cadet racer that the more they ducked their head down on the straightway, the less drag would be produced and the faster the kart would go. This ambitious racer always missed the turn at the end of the straight because their eyes were below the front fairing. The dad in frustration taped a broken yard stick to the bottom of the helmet and it would catch on the steering wheel. Solution solved, the kid never failed to see the turn again.
Mr. Simpson is now making millions off us because we think the lip keeps the strapped on helmet from lifting off our heads.

ParticipantRich, I don’t know yet. My one man construction and pit crew is progressing slowly. It’s hard to think about getting back in the seat. The labor I have to do to get there makes the awards of racing questionable.
Hay, anyone want to give a stab at marketing and R&D with a Cryogenic chamber? I would like to get it a home closer to Denver for more possible uses and easy Ln2 delivery. It is sad to have it sitting in my shop collecting dust.November 21, 2005 at 8:15 pm #51925Anonymous

Doug is onto something here. 😉 But the little ridges running avery where that the Bell Dominators have are much worse. Little things make me want to pull my hair out.
