What tires is everybody using in TAG. We had good luck with the Vega whites on the shifter, how about the Reds in TAG are they any better than the C’s?

I ran new Vega Reds in TaG.

Honestly, I dont think I liked them as much as the YHC’s i have previously run in practice.

Kart was perfectly balanced while testing on used YHC’s last week, but understeered like a pig on race day with the Vegas. :idn: They might like different settings than the YHC’s.

I’d like to get some solid testing on the Reds before making up my mind though.

BTW, where did you buy your Vegas from? I’m having a hard time finding a distributor.

    Spence,

I got the whites from TS Racing because they had them on sale for $160 but now they are back up to the normal $190 also they only have whites. I believe that Stacey has Vega’s over at GJMS not sure whether he has whites only or reds as well?

IMI has Vega whites in stock $180, they are not for the TAG class, 125 pro only.

MG reds are ok, the Vega reds are, well, ill let someone else chime in. Best bet is YHC. The whites are great for shifter, not a super soft tire, but a softer one.

Scott, tag is Touch And Go, standing for electric start engines, plz stop asking the same questions over 2 fourms, call IMI or bandimere and ask your questions, they would be more then happy to help you out.

Vega red’s (they’re crap btw) was the spec tire for Rotax Sr a few years back, they have a stiffer sidewall than the YHC’s. The fronts are very sensitive to your setup; I’ve burned through a set in 30 IMI laps once.

I found the fronts like a degree or two of positive camber on the front (static setting, w/o driver in the kart), about 12 pounds of pressure all around and a wide front track setup. The rear’s last forever, it’s the front tires you’ll have problems with, and they seem to last longer at Bandimere vs. IMI.

You hit the nail right on the head.

The sidewalls are SUPER stiff. They are a huge pain to mount on wheels compared to the YHC’s (which are a breeze).

As far as tire wear, the front tires are completely gone after sunday’s race (can barely see the wear dimples). This was only with one of the two practice sessions, half of qualifying, heat race and 2 laps of the Main. The rears have about normal wear on them.

I think you are right on the camber settings as well, after looking at the tire wear characteristics on the front.

Glad I paid $60 for them on ebay. If I paid full price, I’d be pissed they only last one day. 🙄

This is just my personal opinion, but the Red’s are easier to create a “balanced set up” because you don’t have the problem of the tires sticking to the track like the bridgestones do. The rubber compound formulated by the Italians at the Vega factory has a unique characteristic where it seems to shed any of the sticky compound after a warm-up lap or two.

The effect of quickly wearing down the rubber is that it frees up the chassis and you can slide through the corner. To win with this setup though, you really need to understand and execute what some refer to as a “braking effect”. This technique requires you to enter the corner with a very late braking point, but you need to be maybe 1 or 2 inches off the back bumper of you competitor, using his bumper as a type of “braking effect”. If you time it perfect, you can engage this “braking effect” at the lead karts turn in point, usually this will both slow you down and create a fairly wide opening to exit the corner.

Given that there are more turns, and thus more opportunities to take advantage of this technique at Bandimere, the Red’s would work better at there than IMI.
