Is there something other than compressed air that can be run in tires to maintain a constant tire pressure through out a race? I recall, I think, some running nitrogen.

    Any suggestions or thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Tom

I bought a nitrogen setup from a welding supply place in Boulder. With the tank, regulator, hose, nitrogen charge ($40 to fill) and fittings it came to about $250.

I know nitrogen is generally used, but I have always wondered why argon isn’t used as well? I know it’s more expensive but many people all ready have a bottle of it with a regulater.

Any inert gas would work. The only reason for using a bottled gas is to ensure there isn’t any water content which would affect the pressure rise vs temp rise.

Clearly it is highly dependent upon track and air temperature, but what’s the magnitude of the benefit? Let’s say I think I will pick up a pound of pressure all the way around with air. What would it be with Nitrogen?

Assuming your air is completely dry, the pressure rise should be the same as nitrogen. The advantage with using a bottled gas is that it is dry and so the pressure rise will be consistent vs compressed air which can contain varying amounts of moisture.

Mike – I would have pegged you for a nitrous oxide man. 8)

Tom – did you get my e mail? I’ll bring your pics to Steamboat.
