ParticipantDoes anyone have a favourite chain they like to use and why? Reason I ask is that I am tired of having to replace mine all the time. I have the tension set properly but i think since i weigh 210# my poor little zit engine (Rotax) being so strong and powerful just stretches it out after time. Anyone have suggestions
(other than getting a Sonic, Lepurd or Biland 😥 )Mike Jansen

InactiveYour zitMotor will go through chain (219) at a pretty fair rate. Any of the TaG Motors will. 26+ HP is an awful lot of power for that chain. Remember, this is the same chain that KT100’s use (about 1/2 the HP).
Getting a Leopard, while it may be a wise move in most respects, will not solve your chain life woes.
Getting a top-quality chain will help some. DID Gold is good. I’m told the Wipperman chain is excellent, but you’ll need a new chain breaker as the wipp chain won’t fit in some standard breakers. They do last though.
One thing I found that really extended chain life was using composite rear sprokets like the Extron. They’re lighter, cheaper and quieter than the aluminum, last longer and extend chain life compared to aluminum.
Givem a try.

ParticipantMark,
I haven’t heard Janny in ages!
Yea, the VIG is running that’s why i ask when you’ll be at IMI anytime soon or i’ll see you at the 1st CSC race (hopefully sooner since my balls are being busted 😛 )Chaz,
I’ll check out the composite. DID gold and Wipperman (Mark do you have a preference?) are both good and wear out at the same rate to me. I’ve got Bobby (@ IMI) finding out about gettting chain in 10′ sections I know Comet Karting sells it that way and figured bulk would be best for a season.
Mike
PS Mark, too bad you’re not old enough to remember “TheProfessor”. Alan Prost was smooth AND fast. 😀 But then, you were just out of diapers at the time 😀 😉

InactiveMike, my wipperman chain has lasted at least 4 times longer than the gold DID chain. You still have to be very careful with the alignment of the sprocket, as the wipperman will chew up the rear sprocket if it’s off of alignment. I had a problem with my rear axle moving when I ran the Max weight of 400 lbs. This moved the rear sprocket off center and I could go through a normal chain in 50 laps. I put on two axle collars and the problem went away, but it also stiffens the setup on the rear.
Two things I do for chain life is first I align the rear sprocket up with the engine sprocket with a straight edge. The second is what Glen Cario told me, which is after every day at the track I take off the chain and spray it down with brake cleaner and then drop it into a coffee can with motor oil and let it soak for a few days. I think it was Jay who told me he does the same thing, but he actually heats the can up so the oil can penetrate into the chain links better.
The composite sprockets work great, but during a race I usually drop the right rear off the track at least once, and that’s all it takes to strip off every tooth on a composite sprocket.
One last point, if you’re sprocket teeth aren’t in great shape, throw it away. That’ll stretch out a chain faster than anything else.
