ParticipantTalked with Byron up in Steamboat yesterday and all I can say is what a glutton for punishment. He wants to continue it! The Chamber of Commerce has put it down for the same weekend as this year, the second weekend after Labor Day. The 18th and 19th of September, 2004. This could become THE event of the season.

Great news!
Is the city willing to do something about the surface? Like smooth it?

ParticipantWith the amount of snow and cars on that surface, its unlikely to see it smoothed out, but hopefully the circus does not take as much track (they drilled holes which blocked off some room) and we can use more track and avoid the bumps. All things considered, it was smooth except for like 3 places.

ParticipantMost of the worst bumps were in areas under braking. Greg wanted to reverse the direction as he thought that would smooth it out.

Running the opposite direction would be best, especially for spectators. Imagine being in those bleachers when a 30 + field of karts comes screaming into that first turn right in front of you!!! Awesome!

InactiveSteamboat was a blast this year But do you think the ski resort could provide us with a better slab of pavement?
Another idea for a venue is Copper Mountain Ski area. Maybe have a race there also? Just this last summer the had a Supermotard race there that attracked the best motorcycle racers in the country.
Plus there are plenty of beds!
Then the king of the mountains would be more than one race!December 4, 2003 at 12:30 am #45448Anonymous
InactiveGraeme,
Now that’s a great idea! And maybe more generally, approach other ski areas/towns about hosting races. It could turn out to be like a ‘Karting Tour of Colorado”.

ParticipantIt’s to bad it couldn’t be earlier in the season, as I do think we are flurting with snow that time of year up there.

InactiveI can’t believe you guys are bitching about the bumps!! After the Supernats Steamboat was by far the best most fun race of the year for us. If you want to race on a smooth track then go to Sandia Motorsports park in Albuquerque, it’s smooooth, boring as hell but smoooth.
If Steamboat is willing to host another race next year then go for it! willing kart race hosts are few and far between, make the most of the ones that are willing!! As for the bumps, it’s a parking lot course, why would you expect anything else? learn to deal with them!!

Jon, at 410 pounds miniumum I see a lot of frame rail wear. when you want to step up and buy me a new frame each year I will stop talking about them. Plus not all of us went to the SuperNationals so we don’t have first hand knowage of how bumpy the track was.
I also had a great time at the SBGP and I will attend next year. but if no one ever comments about it then there will be no improvements. It’s called “feedback”, deal with it!December 16, 2003 at 10:25 pm #45452Anonymous
InactiveDoug,
Are the powers that be up in Steamboat stuck on the 18th and 19th of September? Earlier would be better, 1. Less chance for bad weather 2. Better for kids in school. How about the last weekend in August/ first weekend in September?Mike

ParticipantI did screw up on the dates. It will be the weekend after Labor day, Sept 11 and 12. I recieved a calander from the Steamboat Chamber and they did move us up a week compared to this year because of the potential for bad weather. If we moved to the summer, the chamber won’t give us much money to do the race. Temp races are very expensive to put on and we need every dollar we can get.
