I know I have seen it somewhere. It is a jig that hold the bolts and can secure to the drill press. Anyone know where I can get one of these? Are there more than one type?

    Thanks,

    Tom

A very simple one is here
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ix=tools&rank=%2Bpmrank&fqp=launch-date%01-1y%02browse%01228013%02keywords%01drill%20press%20jigs&nsp=store-name%01hi%02score%01proj-unit-sales%02bin-fields%01none%02search-type%01ss&sz=10&pg=3/ref=s_hi_np/102-6505329-2176921

item 23., you could also make it. Ace hardware sells the drill press jig that is similar to above but has clamps and micro adjusters.

You can also make sone – make some harwood pieces that are 1 x1 x lenght of bolt minus 1/2 inch, drill hole in end grain, sized for m8 or whatever, place bolt in hole, add nut, clamp down and drill.

    Tom,

    2×4 scrap…
drill holes in it and fit your bolts in it. Then drill the wood and voila, you have a hole at the end of your bolt and don’t forget cutting oil or any oil for that matter…

    Comet Kart Sales carries them.

(about 1/2 way down the page)

There may be other types, but I used to use this one (or one just like it). It works very good.

Tips: Get a good machine oil for drilling and use it liberally – your drill bit will last longer. Make sure your drill bit will pass through the block without binding – redrill the hole if the fit is a bit tight (don’t forget the oil). Use a vise-grip to hold the block while drilling. If you have a bunch of bolts of the same size figure out where you want to drill tyhem and use a spare bolt with a stopnut run in from the opposite side to act as a guide so all your bolts get drilled the same. Set your press to the lowest speed you can. Don’t force the drilling – take your time. Get the best bits you can find.

I must be a cheap $%!$% not to get a jig.

Of course, it’s more $ to put towards Rich’s Driving suit

Well, they’re only 20 bucks, and you’d think it money well spent the next time you have to drill a steel bolt without one.

And if you’re the enterprising sort, you can drill all your friends’ bolts in exchange for beer!
