ParticipantA couple of Rotaxians and I were kicking around the idea of doing a Rotax only race this fall. Ideas ranged from informal to formal. On the informal end were we all just find a day to go to CRE and have a simple race. On the formal side, we would have a one off championship sort of event with some prizes and such.
Personally, I would love to see all the Rotaxes in the state get together and have at it for a day. Having attended Rotax only races, I think they are a true test of the driver and his ability to set up a kart. The track has nothing to do with who (engine) wins.
I kicked around the idea with George this past weekend and he’s up for it. Infact, he is an enthusiastic supporter of the idea. We kicked around some stuff but here’s some of my thinking on this.
Classes, Rotax Junior, International, and Masters. Possibly Mini-Max if there is interest.
A 2 day deal but all the racing on Sunday. Saturday would be practice. Possible BBQ saturday night if there is interest.
Lots of racing. With only 3 classes, we can take our time and still have plenty of time for at least 2, maybe 3 heat races and a long main.
Tires, since most of us in the state are using MG yellows, that should be our tire. But do we allow new tires, or do we go with a no new tire rule. After all, we all have plenty of used tires to burn up. I know I do. Only problem I see there is some one actually thinks this is important and goes out and scuffs a couple of sets to get around the no new tire rule.
Fuel would be MS93 and the Motrex oil and available at the track.
Other basic rules would be RMax. That means we use RMax jets and such. Yeah, I know I have to put the Rotax rad back on, but so what.
Prizes, what do you think? I need another trophy in my house like I need a hole in the head. Do we want this to just be bragging rights or do you want to take something home? Cash?
We have plenty of Rotaxes in the state. More than half the field at the CSC races are Rotaxes. There are several Rotaxes who have not run CSC races, only RMax. Wouldn’t it be great if we all got together for a day and just had fun racing? If we all showed, up, there could be a good size field in every class.
Tracks. I would vote for CRE as it is one of the best drivers tracks around. (I would hate to run TAg there, we will get killed in the slow corners) Both Bandimere and IMI have strong rental programs and this type of event would not generate enough income for them to want to give the Rotaxes the track for a day. While we love Grand Junction, it’s just too far for the majority of the Rotaxes to go. But I’m sure the Cooks would welcome us with both arms wide open. A possible wild card would be The Track, if Jim gets it done.

InactiveDoug,
I like the idea of people being proactive and toss these things out for opinions.
I guess for me, I am a little concerned as there is going to be a race at PPIR in October, the Rmax Nationals, Steamboat, GJ Nations Cup. I would question how thin do I want to be spread.
For me it doens’t look like I will be going to the rmax nationals because that is going to cost me ~$1,600 and it is a long haul, unless somebody wants to sponsor me for a good chunk of $$$.
I think having it at CRE is a good choice as George supports the R-max Challenge and he deserves it for that!
bottom line for me is:: it is iffy 50/50

Finding a date is problematic, there is a lot of stuff going on in karting this fall. But Steamboat is in August this year. The PPIR event has some issues which I’m sure they will solve and the event will go on. The RMax grands do take up a lot of time and money. I know that is why many Rotaxians in the state are not doing them and that is also why they are not doing the RMax Challenge races. The Nations Cup is one we clearly can’t step on, so you are right, it does limit options.
Since there is so much racing going on, that is one reason I am leaning more toward the informal type of race. No new tires certainly helps cut costs.

ParticipantDoug,
I’d be interested in it, date dependant.
I’ve niether run at CRE nor THE TRACK at Centennial so either would be good choices…July 18, 2005 at 4:31 pm #51216Anonymous
InactiveDear Doug;
The used tire thing probably isn’t a good idea at CRE due to the abrasive nature of the track. Your talking about qualifying, 2 or 3 heat races, and a final event. I personally don’t think that a set of used MG tires would be safe come the final event. We’ve ran the Bridgestone YGK tires down there and they wouldn’t make it that far, at least the fronts wouldn’t.
Just a thought if your talking about using used tires and are going to allow only one set to be used all day.

ParticipantDoug,
I think it would be a lot of fun. I’ve run at CRE a few times this year and the racers there are a good group.
I’d prefer that it be used tires only. I’ve done some practice and testing with used MG Yellows there and they held up OK (Mike, they’ll definitely make it through your usual 4 laps). Used Mojos would hold up too – be my guest 😆
I think RMax specs would be good – that would let the RMax guys be competitive without having to get TaG parts.
Scheduling will be the main difficulty for me. I’m pretty booked up with racing and vacation through October. If I can fit it in I will.

ParticipantDon’t make it only one set of used tires for the event.
Many people have a few sets of tires that would be good for one race, let them use em up.July 19, 2005 at 2:54 pm #51219Doug Welch

I would lean toward letting guys use as many used tires as they want. Like you said, burn’em up. My only concern is that some one would actually take this seriously and scuff some new tires to get around the intent of the used tire rule.

ParticipantHey, I have finished the last race from start to finish! And it will continue so ease up there trigger!
:k
BTW I have my GJ tires, they only have 11 laps and 6 corners on em…

ParticipantSounds like fun, Doug, if we can find a time that works. It would be nice to find out just what’s going on with the PPIR event; the web site doesn’t seem to have been updated in ages and Phil didn’t reply to a question I sent him. I’m fine with used tires, and like the idea of being able to use multiple sets to get through the day. CRE makes a lot of sense for all the reasons that have been mentioned.
