On a more somber note than today’s posts I thought I’d bring to your attention one of the greatest drivers ever to don a helmet.
Although Gilles Villeneuve raced before many of you were even in diapers I thought you would enjoy reading about this great racer who died today 25 years ago when his teamate “violated” their gentlemen’s agreement at a race that was not a points earning race at the time (but that’s another story)

    Mike,

If my memory (and Autocourse) serves me right, Pirroni screwed Gilles at San Marino a race earlier. Gilles was killed in practice at Belgium.

He was a racers, racer. I loved watching him throw the Ferrari around the streets of Long Beach with Piquet, de Angelis, Lauda, Rosberg, Alan Jones, etc…

For your consideration, his infamous duel with Ren? Arnoux in 1979 at Dijon.

One of the best on track battles i’ve ever seen courtesy of one of the best and fastest ever.

    RIP Gilles, you are missed.
