There was a red flag.. On the motorcycle track…
It happened in the 125 Novice heat race.
New IMI track record, 185 ft. off the track with a 30 ft. kart jump. Kart roll and bail earned bonus points.
    I love this sport.

Back at the trailer, we now fit Roger with a flight suit, rip cord, winged shoes, and oxygen mask. (Clear For Take Off, Rogers on the track, near the back straight!!!) (look out below)

I have included the inspection of the master cylinder bracket weld to my pre-race checklist… Very important for it to stay put for stopping on the backstretch on the IMI kart track but not needed for big air on the motorcross burm jump during karting heat races…. Whoa…

When a kart goes up and over, there is not always a need for a red flag and there is no hard fast rule that when a kart goes over, there is a mandatory red flag.

The first reason for a red flag is if the track is blocked or very resricted as to create an extreame hazard to other racers. The second is injuries that require an ambulance run.

In this case, there was a corner worker there with a radio. The kart that went up landed on all four and the driver got out all most immediately and walked off the track. By the time the leaders got back around, the track was clear, the driver checked by the corner worker and the race allowed to continue.

All too often I have seen a red flag cause a worse accident than the one that caused the red flag in the first place. Sometimes a racer sees the red flag and immediately slames on the brakes with out warning to racers behind. Next thing you know, some guy in the back who is not looking past his feet plows into the now stoped racers in front. I’ve seen it way too many times.

While the procedure varies from track to track, the safest way to do it is to first, raise your hand to signal slowing, then lift, move to the side of the track, then brake to slowly reduce speed. This gives those behind the maximum amount of time to see the flags and slow themselves safely. At this point, the racers should proceed slowly back to the start finish yet should be prepared to yield to emergency vehicals on the track. All racers, when in doubt about red flag procedures, they should ask at the drivers meeting how red flags are handled at that particular track.

The red flag will usually only be displayed at one or two points around the track, the start finish line a possibly at a flag station located in the middle of the track. For example, this weekend Ian was in between the bump turn and turn 5. He was showing the blue and black flags.

The Olympic Judges from Gymnastics scored Roger a 9.87…
Had he landed with all 4 simultaneously he’d have scored higher. Of course, they didn’t give him full credit for the start of his maneuver 😀

Doug, THANK YOU for putting red flag procedure out for all to review.

I guess I was lucky on that one to just walk away with only a bruised shin. I’m currently working on a modified Hummer 125 shifter and a 10 ft. jump for Steamboat. Is this how Evil Kenevil got started????

    Brad,

What do you mean you aren’t planning on going to the SSGP?! You and your family have to come over for it. Ok, you don’t have to, but we will miss you if you aren’t there.

    Brad,
They have been running in there all year. More at GJMS, but also Sabre has come over to Action Karting and IMI and she has run. Only not getting points for the series. I know it has been a sore spot, but I don’t think it would be fair to say they can’t race now! I don’t think the rest of the Junior 1 parents would go for giving up a trophy for a top 3 spots either, but there would be room on the track and a participant award for her. Of course, I am not a Junior 1 parent, so I am sure if anyone has a problem with that they will let us know, but I can’t see why. The championship in that class has already gone to Ben Whetstone.

And the way things are shaping up, there should be an actual class for those things next year. How do you like it? Has it been good to you? Hope to see you there.

The funny thing about that flipped kart is that was a friend of mine I let go racing in my kart before he moves to CA to start his first job. So this was his FIRST race experience, and as he put it, ‘not the experience I was anticipating’. He had fun though and tomorrow he leaves for his first job out of college. 😀

Bad news was the damage to the kart totaled almost $600. 🙁
