InactiveHey Guys,
Broke a seat strut at Bandimere today, so I need to get it welded. Also need to get a re-enforcment bar put in because the Gold chassis has a fairly weak seat strut design.
Does anyone have any recommendations on a welder? I’m located in Boulder, so I’d like someone in the 15 mile range (longmont, westminster, etc).
Thanks!
Spencer

ParticipantSpencer,
My husband, Ken, can weld about anything you need… but we are in Fort Collins, maybe a little too far North for you.Angie MacEwen

InactiveCheck w/ Brad up at IMI. He’s got a TIG welder and does very good work with it. Call ahead so he can block the time (he can be a busy guy).
I’ve owned 2 Golds (both Firefox 100 chassis) and never had a problem with struts breaking anywhere, and I ran Bandi a lot. I weigh a lot and would really pound the hell out of those struts. Also had to really stretch the struts to accomodate my………errrrrr……….robust frame. In fact, I never had any problems with my GOLDs that were manuf – related. Who told you they were weak?

ParticipantSpence,
I did the same with my GP chassis at Bandi Saturday!
Chaz, thanks for the info.March 22, 2004 at 5:06 pm #46516Anonymous
InactiveThanks for the recommendations guys! I dropped the kart off with Brad at IMI yesterday and should hopefully get it back within the next couple days.
Chaz,
The reason I say the strut looks weak is because the engine side seat strut has a 90 degree bend in it, that was bent using a crush bender (opposed to mandrel). Right at the bend, it is practically crushed flat. Its a very weak looking bend.
Then again, not sure if that was bent by the factory or if the previous owner bent it like that. :idn:
Other than that, the Gold chassis looks fairly solid.
Thanks again guys!

That bend doesn’t sound right at all. If I’m visualizing this right, there’s no question that it should have broken – which, of course, is not what you want to happen.
On the bright side, it didn’t happen in a race.

InactiveHere is a link to what it looks like…..

I told the guys at IMI to weld in a re-enforcement bar to prevent this from happening again.
I also might add in an extra strut per side, which should take some load off each strut, and perhaps increase rear weight transfer (which I need).

This is TOTALLY wrong.
The motor-side strut does not bend like that from the factory. In fact, I can’t imagine why the strut was bent that way in the first place. The only way you “need” to bend that strut is in and out (left and right) not up and down as it appears your chassis’ been done.
No wonder it broke.
Also, i might be able to help some with setups for that chassis. Can you tell me what chassis it is? It will show the model name on the homologation tag on the rear crossbar (the one right behind the seat). And how much do you weigh?

InactiveChaz,
Thanks for the input. It really never looked right.
It is an ’02 Gold Eyrie Chassis. I weigh about 160-165lbs. If you’ve got any chassis setups you can suggest, feel free to post them here or email me at [email protected]
