I?m just curious; do the top qualifiers carry additional weight in their horns and drums? 😆 Congrats to these gentlemen and their bands, they worked hard to get there.

If you have never been to the state band finals, go and enjoy the day. I spent three different days there watching my two oldest and their bands.

Here is more info on the day. http://www.coloradobandmasters.org/display_page.asp?site_id=1

Yeah…. finals is definately worth your while… just so you know, both mine and greg’s bands bypassed quarter finals by being in the top six in our school size (that is how they are classified instead of by band size) so in 5A we are automatically in semi finals… and gregs band is in 4A. I don’t know about very many bands and what shows they have because we don’t watch that many… but there are some really fun shows

Araphoe (5A) has an original show titled “Arapahoedown” which is a fun show and is a highly ranked show
Legacy (5A) is a very good band as is Pomona in 5A

and from what I saw in 4A, the ones to watch besides greg’s is air academy, loveland, and rampart…

Fairview (my band) has an original show this year called “Boulder Lights” (we are in boulder) and it features Pearl Street Shuffle which is a fun song with props and shoppers and street performers and many other fun things… there are also two other songs but I’ll let you find out for yourselves!!

    HAVE FUN!

Cool stuff, I still have my two trombones from my marching band days 25 years ago. I just can’t make it sound quite like it used to.
Is there still jazz band competition’s too.

there are a few, but they aren’t taken as serious as marching band ones… like the jazz band competitions are like walk around and just show up in the practice room on time… marching band is like all formal and marching is all uniform with all the sweet uniforms… its kind of lik ethe prom of bands… the jazz band is like that weird informal thing you never went to.

    Greg and Chris,
I am filing an official protest with the National Marching Band and Spit-Blowers Association to read as follows:

Being that the two named bands: Conifer and Fairview are not competing in qualifying and heat marching rounds. Their respective marching bands should not be allowed to start the final event on New Marching Band Shoe Rubber because it is a unfair advantage to the competition.

oh don’t worry, at least in my band i can safely say that like ten people have probably worn this same shoe as me over the years…. fortunately i don’t need to wear a hat with the chain in the front that everyone chews on… eww

How funny, Chris what would be your socializtic veiw of Symphonic or Orchestra music players? Is there still allstate band competitions too?

I guess I must be one of the weird ones again. When I was in band I played booth kinds of music, country and western. Really, I wore all the hats Jazz/Symphony/Orchestra/Marching band/All State.

Do the winners go to the nationals still?
    Have fun.

Oh no, it’s deja vu all over again…
3/4 cadence, straight eyes, bent knees, lugging the bongo-timbali clusters out in the rain, with sleet on our hands, the horn players lips freezing to the horns, and having to open with the theme from “Rocky.” It’s so cold, the drum sticks slide out of our grip all day long….
    Still, the best memories…
    Good luck you guys,
    Jim (former percussionist)(still play a mean steering-wheel drum set…)

And now the results. Chris’ band, Fairview was 6th in class 5A going into semi-finals. The top 7 bands go on to the finals. Unfortunatly for them, they fell back a bit and several bands picked it up a bit and they came in 8th in the semi-finals. Their day was done.

Greg’s band was 5th going into semi-finals and they managed to hold on to the spot in semis but barely as Dakota Ridge really improved. In the finals, the kids were a little bit flat and it showed in the scores. Dakota Ridge continued to improve and they took the 5th spot. So Conifer finished 6th in class 4A.

It was cold but the kids really put on some spectacular shows last night. Now we can finally relax and get back to the other fun stuff.

That’s only one of the reasons Mike. His sticks resemble little green bottles from Holland 😯

    Curt,

That was a given and I didn’t think it needed explaining.

BTW what’s the skinny at the track? Or do we still need to be thinking of off road tires?

yeah ours was sad… like our score form last year wouldn’t have even put us in last that is how much EVERY band screwed up… our score was 5th by every judge out there except the Color Guard judge (who put us in 6th) and the General Effect guy (who put us 11th… HOW??? THAT WAS OUR STRONG PART!!!!!!) ok well that stuff happens I guess… at least it wasn’t like s different festival where all of our props sailboated across the field in the wind… it was really funny! like it almost took out the whole band…

Hold your heads up high. I think it is difficult to compete against judges as well as your competition. The work you two (and your bands) did just to qualify for State speak well of your dedication. I hope you and your parents can relax, drive your karts and enjoy the remainder of the fall.
