My name is Jeff Mooney and I’ve been looking at getting into karting for a number of years. I finally pulled the trigger on a barely used Arrow X1 TaG with a full MyChron catalog of sensors. I live about 10 minutes from IMI, so I will be up there most of the time, but if my schedule permits, I’d like to run the Race the Rockies series next year.

    What motor?

Have you driven it yet? Impressions?

Do girls throw themselves at you? (it happens)

As careless as it sounds, the only time I’ve ridden in it was a couple times back and forth up my street. Once the clutch grabs, this thing really hauls, nothing like the Sodi rentals at TTAC. According to the MyChron, the engine only has 1.9 hours on it. It is a ROTAX FR125, setup to run ROTAX Seniors or Masters. Since I am 33 years old and about 180 lbs, I would be in the Seniors class.

No girls yet, but I couldn’t handle anymore (wife + 2 daughters). But I must say I do look stunning in my new Alpinestars suit setup.

I have two spare FR125 engines the previous owner sold me with the kart, each one needs different work on them. Do you think it would be worth forking over the money to upgrade with the EVO package while its being rebuilt? I’d most likely go to Unser for rebuilds, as this is probably the closest ROTAX dealer to me.

    Welcome!

I would definitely consider an EVO kit as the rules require it for racing next season. The EVO is also easier to drive.

Greg can point you in the right direction.

    Come on out and race.

I also live near IMI in Erie. I occasionally drive IMI. I spend most of my time at TTAC because that is where I do most of my racing.

Definitely take your motor(s) to Greg at Unser. He’s a great resource and has been around karting his whole life. He knows all about the women that come to these kart races. It gets crazy sometimes. I can barely make it to my trailer after a race, let alone all of the ones hanging around my helicopter trying to catch a glimpse of me–and I’m just a mechanic!

Be careful running that thing on the street, lots of people here will lecture you about it. (Or, just don’t mention it anymore on this message board) As an adult, I am sure you are aware of the risks.

Ahhh, didn’t know the EVO engine was required next year.

It would be fun to get a few of us up north together at IMI for some fun laps one afternoon.

    Hey Jeff,

You should stop by TTAC this Saturday.

Come check on your next season opponents?!

    Hope see you there,

I Second Leo. Come on out on sat. You’ll learn a lot just by hanging around.

I have come to a few Saturday Race the Rockies practice sessions this year, just to get a feel for how a race weekend goes. I will see if I can muster a few hours to check it out.

To be honest, I really wanted to get a DD2 kart, as I’ve always had some affinity for them. But, trying to find one in good condition is pretty tough, and I heard that they are not the most reliable ROTAX setups right now. So, I figured a TaG would suit me fine for now. In that process, little did I realize I was signing up for one of the largest competition fields in the region. Oh well, I’ll just try to stay out of everybody’s way…..

Gotcha about the street thing. While I am not a safety pioneer by any means, I don’t want to do something that will assuredly hurt/kill me. I was comfortable doing a couple 3-4 house pulls on a sparsely used residential street on a Sunday afternoon. I live in a semi-rural area, so seeing an ATV or even a motocross bike on the roads is not uncommon.
