ParticipantBrother of Bud,
You won’t need the passport if you are running TaG. If you are running a rotax spec series you will need to have your engine sealed to pass tech. You could take your motor to one of the local builders and have it inspected and sealed if you choose to race a rotax only series.
This can be confusing, feel free to ask more questions. Take a trip out to Centennial to see the Rotax nationals this week. Those guys have seals on their motors.

InactiveOkay, I get that.
Should I assume the safety-wired “Rotax” markers on my engine are from the factory, then? (The kart was lightly used–I am certain the kart never had the engine rebuilt or blueprinted.)

ParticipantCisco,
Find out from the previous owner who did the work and go ask them to issue a new passport. You’ll probably have to give them the seal number to confirm it’s thiers. If it’s a new motor without being worked on call the dealer or call SSC (once the Nationals are over)
Hope that helps. I had the same situation with my rotax and Acceleration gave me a passport when they did the rebuild. It was 50.00 if I remember correctly…

ParticipantA service center can not issue a new passport without going through Rotax, even if it is the service center who did the work. There is a very specific procedure to follow.
First the serial number has to be submitted to Rotax to ensure it is a USA engine.
Then the service center has to completely dis-assemble the motor to verify every dimension in the engine for conformance to specification. At that point, the engine can be re-assembled and a new passport issued. The new passport costs $50.00 plus what ever the service center charges for the inspection service plus parts consumed in teh process. It can easily run between $350 to $500 to get a passport replace for a perfectly legal engine. That is why I always tell customers that an engine without a passport is worth $500 less right off the top.
