Just thought I’d get some answers/opinions regarding data acquisition units for my Leopard TAG kart.
I plan on buying a Mychron 3 unit but I am wondering what would be the best option: 1. Basic with only CHT for $280
    2. Basic with 2 temp. inputs CHT & H2O for $350
What do some of you other Leopard guys/gals run?
If I run just CHT what is a good baseline temp to work with for tuning in Colorado?
I would like to keep it simple and somewhat reasonably priced.
    thanks.

I wouldn’t bother with CHT and recommend EGT instead. CHT on water-cooled engines are of little value IMO and tend to respond too slowly. EGT gives a more reliable reading on how your engine is running (lean/rich) and responds almost instantly to to changes in the engine.

    H2O is also very useful.

So I’d recommend a datalogger with sensors for EGT and H20

I have to diagree with chazilla. I think you need both.
    They are both important.
Egt more for tuning and water temp for overall condition of
    motor.
    For what its worth.

We have the T2 Jim for our TAG. The EGT for tuning, and H20 Temp for monitoring engine temp, and it works perfect. You can get one at hotlaps kart supply with 2 sensor temps and lap timer/beacon for $339, they are pretty quick with shipping too. Hope this helps.

    Ben,
did you run the H2O lead off of the water line or do it with the Rotax setup? I have heard about doing both. I am also quite close to Highlands Ranch and would love to see how you did the set up.
Pvt. msg. me and let me know if we can get together so I can see what to do.
thanks for the Hotlaps info. also.

    Jim,

I don’t remember for sure if the unit you’re looking at is downloadable or not, but I would definately recommend that you get one that is. You can learn a incredible amount by downloading the data and analyzing it. On that topic, consider that sometimes there can be spikes in your data (especially or RPM and speed values) caused by bumps in the track that may give you innaccurate maximum values. If you look at the data on the kart, all you can get are the maximums, so you have to download the data to be able to get accurate numbers.

I know you said you wanted to keep it simple, but the software really is pretty intuitive so it’s not too hard to figure out how to use it 😀 .

We use a MyChron 3 Golds, with H2O only for temp on both my and my brother’s rotaxes, but I do wish we had EGT also.

    Hope this helps.
