I agree with Rich. While I was working the corners, I learned two very important items.
1. When you are qualifying, don’t rush out onto the track and tailgate the kart in front of you. All this does is make you mad and causes you to grip the steering wheel. For the Masters, I think that two to three kart lengths is the minimum. I watched several karters bump other karts during qualifying. This only slows you down. If you cannot get around safely, take the pit lane and come back out on the track. I only saw one Junior do this, none of the Internationals or Masters did this.
2. Don’t “dirt track” the kart, especially around turn 2 and turn 8. The fastest karts rarely made a sound as they went around these two turns. Their hands continually kept the kart turning right. If you end up turning the wheel left on a right hander, you are scrubbing off speed. The top four karts in the masters turned in smothly and never yanked the wheel, didn’t squeel the tires or slide around the turn. On the other hand, the karts that yanked the wheel and slid around the turn lost two feet to several kart lengths down to the next turn.
This was a grea time for all.
