ParticipantI reached the end of my clutch life on saturday, the friction material on the friction hub wore through to the steel, it then locked up on the hub and broke. Upon examination, it appears that the design worked exactly as intended and prevented any other damage.
Well, now i need to replace the friction hub. I took the clutch bell off and TRIED to remove the large nut holding everything together. I was afraid this might be a reverse thread or something so I stopped messing with it until I got some advice from you guys.
Do I need a special ‘clutch tool’ to take this off or put another one on? Is the nut holding the clutch a reverse thread or just lock-tited on? I am pretty sure that the part I am replacing is the same as a leopard part.

ParticipantPiston stop and a gentle hand with a extended ratchet to keep the stress off the con rod…
Doug sell em… So do all the other shops…

ParticipantThanks, Mike. Piston stop and new clutch are enroute. I guess jamming a flat head screwdriver into the side of the motor wasnt the best option for keeping it from turning over. :idn:

ParticipantKirk,
That’s what we’re here for. Let the vets help you learn from OUR mistakes and point you in the right direction. Sam Walls helped me A LOT when I got in 4 years ago and all he asked was to pay it forward when newbies are at the track.
To everyone: don’t be afraid to ask questions! The less mistakes you make the more time you have to practice, race and race fast.

Yeah, ummmmm…turns out the nut holding the clutch IS reverse thread. I paid the price with a stripped nut. Luckily it didn’t strip the threads on the end of the crank. My raceday was ruined anyway, turns out I needed a clutch puller, too. OK, back to the catalog.
