Good article. Especially good because it’s giving more coverage (on SPEED’s website no less) to karting in the USA. But it is totally right in every respect. As great of a thing (for fun and as a starting point for new drivers) as karting is, it’s not promoted nearly enough is the USA. It’s sad that whenever you mention a kart to your average motorsports-ignorant american, they immediately think of the slow put-puts that you rent for 5 bucks at the local fun park….not something with a similar driving experience to a Champ Car. 😐

I just wish that the US was as kart-crazy as Italy or a large portion of Europe. That would make things all the much easier for those of us with dreams of doing this for a living. 8)

(If only SPEED covered Karting on TV!)

One of my most memorable days was when we were in Malaga Spain:

We were sitting on the second story deck of the karting restaurant having beers and talking about what we had just done in the rental karts, while other karters were having a go. It was shortly thereafter that I bought a kart and started racing in Colorado. The place was first class and there were a few Modena’s in the parking lot. My cousin showed me a photo in the pro shop of a very young kid named Fernando Alonso and a guy named Kimi Raikkonnen.

If Americans can promote and watch NASCAR/IRL/CHAMP CAR then there is no reason they can’t promote karting the same way.

Being in Spain and England was an eye opener. You should have talked to Donal (Superslow) when he was here. He could have told us stories…
