InactiveHowdy ya’ll,
I’m pasting the contents of an e-mail I received from one of my co-workers who is serving in Afghanistan.
“Hello Everyone!!!
I’m doing fine here in Afghanistan, and a big thanks has to go out to all of you! Tracy seems to be doing fine thanks to all of your support and help along the way. We are truly blessed to have such incredible family and friends back there in the States. I’ll have to confirm with my mom, but I don’t think I’ve ever gone this long without a Beer since I was born…haha. My liver is freaked out ; ) but it’s all good. I’ve decided to tell all of you a story and the reason why this email it titled “New Request”…
At Camp Phoenix there’s a man that they call “RAMBO”. Not because he looks like him or can kill people at will, but because of how big his heart is. He’s an Afghan man, that lost his entire family, and home to the Taliban here in Kabul a couple of years ago. He has set up camp outside of Camp Phoenix everyday since then. Not to beg an try and get over on us, but to protect us. Anyone who comes close to the gate at Camp Phoenix runs into RAMBO. With a club in his hand he’s a force to be reckoned with for anyone that passes by or has no reason to be around there. Not too long ago he was shot by a Taliban drive bye. He was back that night protecting us before he could even recover, fearing that if something happened he would personally be responsible for anyone getting wounded or killed, just like what had happened to his family. Just recently the ARMY decided to employ this man. Gave him a small place on base to live, and a small pay check once a month. They even gave him an army uniform and instead of having rank on it or a special badge, he has a patch of a club. If I was a guessing man, he’ll probably be there till the day he dies…protecting your troops. In my eyes this man is a hero, and a true patron to this war. I often wonder what I would do in this situation. I thank God for “Freedom and Peace” and everything that goes with it back there. I know that I will never take them for granted as long as I live. I truly believe that this is what these people want…
As most of you know I’ve been training and working with the ANA(Afghan National Army) on my off time. Today we sat together and prayed for the families that were affected by the horrible events that happened 5 years ago. They truly feel horrible and affected by it also. Not only for the reason behind it but because their God would not approve of these acts either. After talking with different people and finding out about the orphanages around here they seem to be currently stocked up for the winter. So as a military member I’ve decided to change the direction, and support the Afhgan troops families. These gentleman are from all over Afghanistan and like me, are away from there families and friends for months at a time. I asked the ANA First Sergeant that I mentor, to get me a list of his 85 enlisted troops and how many children each of them have. I figure we could all support them through the winter with clothing, blankets and shoes, just as Americans support soldiers families back home. Not only would we be showing them how much we care, but also it instills in them a sense of unity and companionship throughout. The last thing a soldier needs is to fight for his country and worry about his families well being. Trust me on this one…So if it’s ok with all of you, through your donations I’d like to do this. It doesn’t matter how many boxes I get, I have room for all of them. Dig something up a from around the house or visit your local “good will” store, heck you could even go to garage sales around the neighborhood. Here’s my address for those who don’t have it…
