ParticipantI had a chat with Brad and Bobby at IMI, and we are trying to run a 4 stroke low HP class as part of the IMI ClubRace on August 18th. Right now, we have 3 committed racers, and that is enough to have the class. I have two clones I will be running and Greg has one clone he will be running. We are planning on putting beginning drivers in the clones.
Anybody else out there with a clone, briggs, etc interested in racing on August 18th? :anyone
If you are interested in the clone’s that Greg and I have put on our karts, we purchased them from ARC racing in Georgia. Here are the links to the motor, mount, muffler, and clutch, I bought.
Race Ready Motor, I got it with the aluminum flywheel and pipe and muffler, and had them set the valves for WKA rules. They also have a kit form of the above with an informative video on how to build the motor.
Mongrel Clutch
MountGive me a shout if you are interested!

ParticipantI think these clones are great. No, they’re not very fast when you’re used to a TaG or a Shifter, but they’re plenty fast to have fun in, especially if you’re racing with a bunch of people. Lots of people (myself included) complain about the high costs of karting, this is a perfect answer. Seriously, ~$800 for a racing engine that you can bolt to that spare chassis hanging in your garage…pump gas and tires that could last all season, how great is that? Next best thing would be Spec PRD, I suppose…
But I digress…if I had one, I would be out there. Have fun!

ParticipantDoesn’t Brad stock the Briggs LO206 at IMI that the Junior Karting club has had years of proven competitive racing at a similar or even cheaper price? SBR is also a local dealer for Briggs Motorsports Products. Some people may think I’m nuts, yet I can’t hold back my opinion about the clone motors.
Richard, Jon and Greg are :loco if they think the clone is a better choice over the LO206 for promotion of cheap dependable and easy to use low HP competitive kart racing motors. Here is a post about a new rule for clones used on a sprint track in TX.
http://karting.4cycle.com/showthread.php?t=496566 :rantOK with that said, I do hope this new class takes off. I have a kart and motor set up that could be used for this event if anyone may know of a person that would like to race it.

ParticipantI have to agree with Rodney. The Animal/206 is a purpose build kart racing engine for about the same cost as a Clone and the Briggs has a long history of cost effective reliability. Richard and Greg, if you stay with the Clones, please don’t exclude the guys with the 206’s and or Animals. The cost of getting a Clone to perform and not explode would be more than what a 206 cost.
For what it’s worth, we do like the concept!
Respectfully,
Eddy

ParticipantRodney,
I will take you up on the offer of a kart and engine package that works. I have a buddy that is an SCCA driver who might be interested, never raced karts. Does that work for you?
Eddy,
I’m including anybody who wants to drive an approximately similar package, I am interested in showing folks they can start out in something that is inexpensive and allows for learning to drive. My guess is that most folks would “move up” to a faster class. The clones and LO206 accomplish that very nicely. I built the karts I have with the budget I had. I’m getting my friends and neighbors out driving in them. I’ve also had quite a few folks walk up at the track, and couple them drove. My goal is getting folks interested.

ParticipantGood luck guys I hope it works, I might just want to build a kart for this. Can’t ever see myself getting back into faster classes though.
I’ll be interested to see where it goes.

ParticipantAwesome Richard, really like what you guys are doing. Good luck, anything we can do to help support you’re efforts we will do.
They are so much fun and don’t break the bank.
Respectfully,
Eddy

ParticipantEddy,
I appreciate the offer of support. Encouraging folks to come race on the August 18 would be very helpful, and make for a lot of fun. The race is held in conjunction with CJKC and will have a TAG class, Shifter Class, and a 4 Stroke class run what you have.
Also, if you would contact the guy who raced 4 stroke at the last PPKRC race to come race with us on August 18th, that would be great.
Thanks,

ParticipantYes Richard, in fact we were talking with some guys today at SBR about getting to IMI on the 18th. The guy you mentioned (Mark) just bought a TAG and I believe he put the Animal on ebay. However, we will reach out to him to come up to IMI.

ParticipantI bought my clone over a year ago with the intention of using it as a coaching and demo kart, and for that it has served its purpose extremely well. Its nice to have a kart that is closer in speed to the Micro and Mini classes for the kids to learn off of. It also has been a great way to let people who have never driven an outdoor kart hop in an experience speed without the risk of damaging expensive parts and engines.

ParticipantRichard, I missed seeing your bumper at SBR last weekend. 😛
I’ll have to see how my work load goes as to whether I’ll have time to convert my old 4 stroke open Margay to the LO206 power or I guess I could just run the alky open stroker flathead on it?August 13, 2013 at 3:05 pm #66538richardhensley
ParticipantRodney,
Can you call me at 720-253-5024?
If you need a driver for that thing, I can ask around.

ParticipantHmm, I think I have enough stuff in the garage to build 3 karts.
If you have an old chassis, Brad has one of these kits on ebay:
I believe it includes clutch mount, pipe everything except the axle sprocket. I believe it is a much better engine and better deal than the ARC kit.
LO206 is the way to go. Stay tuned to this thread on EKN. Rob Howden is trying out the LO206 at the Rock Island Grand Prix. http://ekartingnews.com/forums/topic/ekn-lo206-project-racing/

ParticipantLes,
Are you going to build one and race on Sunday?
August 14, 2013 at 10:55 pm #66541Leo Ahearn
ParticipantI’m available as a 4 stroke driver Sunday and can pay for the arrive and drive privilege if there is an abundance of karts and a shortage of drivers. Scrubs for the race is fine with me.
