InactiveBrad,
You will eat your guts out sitting out a yr and watching-don’t do that.
Check all the local kart shops for a used tag kart. Or negotiate with kart shops on a “arrive and drive program” for the whole year. Be careful 3K may get you a decent kart but you will have at least another 3k in safety equipment, tools, tires, gas, spare parts, race fees and yearly registrations, practice fees. I don’t want to scare you these are the facts.
Buy a used one practice and race some club races. I was much like you when I started 10 yrs ago-NO EXPERIENCE but a huge desire to race. Went right into shifter ranks and started racing. I just started in the back for the first half of the season and got lapped. The rest of the season I wasn’t lapped!
Go into the Tag Masters-the best division, the best guys, closest racing, most enries in this division every year.
See you at the track this season. Stop by #51 CRG-rotax masters

InactiveRich,
I look forward to meeting you and thanks for the advice. Arrive and Drive I like that idea. I will check into it.
See you at the track,

ParticipantHello, welcome to karting.
I’m Greg Welch my dad is Doug who is the owner of Shockwave Karting. Charles and Mike are both customers of ours. Just a heads up look to spend around 3k to 3500 on your first kart, it is very hard to find anything below 3. Also normally if you do find anything for that cheap its typically not worth it. I was out at the track for a bit today, I think I pulled in after you left however, we had two tag karts out with red white and blue Shockwave graphics. You definitely picked a good sport.
We are having our 3rd free seminar of the year this coming Saturday at the Shockwave factory. This one is on data acquisition so a lot of the material will be stuff you don’t need being new. However it will be a great chance to meet a large portion of the karting community and to ask any questions you have. we also have all the different chassis and engines lying around that you could see and get more familiar with karting. It would be great to see you there.
Greg

After racing a few times at Action Karting and have never been in anything bigger than 13hp karts…. I would love go get a chance to take something out besides the 13hp renters…this year. So,… for now it will be more questions and more dreaming. I am looking to get involved so if anyone knows of events, seminars, training guides etc….
Hello Brad – I’m another rookie – life long auto racing fan, and as of late last summer, recent devotee of karting. Except for a few runs on “real” equipment, courtesy of a couple of guys in the karting community (where the first ride is always free….), I’ve been getting ready to start shelling out for equipment myself. Now that spring is nearly here, I’ve finally begun. Then out on the tracks to get seat time, and maybe a race or two this year (likely in the back, but who cares for now)
ITMT, have also been doing laps in the little rentals, mainly at TTAC, and one charity race last autumn (in the rentals). I’m an “old geezer” from your end of the life span – in my 50’s, but I still think I’m in my 20’s and am always looking for folks to do laps with who are at the same level.
Do go to the Shockwave seminars – I’ve only been able to make it to one, so far, but hope to attend Saturday’s, although the weather guess-cast looks so good I may end up at The Track instead… The folks are very very helpful, both at Shockwave and in the classes.
Do also log in to this forum often, both for info and community. Also attending club races as a spectator is a great experience, and you can learn from talking to the racers as well, although as someone else already alluded to, I’m sure not nearly as good as running in them. Plus there have been some excellent posts re. racing attire and equipment you’ll need, etc. (see the Newbie forum – I’d posted some time back on that and received some very helpful, and detailed, responses)
As a fellow rookie, I’m always happy to share what little I know and to talk karting as well.
Re. events, etc. I’d like to see a rookie rumble, (although that could easily deteriorate into something like the Keystone Cops Do Karting). 🙂
What, if anything, do you have so far?
Cheers – Sheldon Potter

ParticipantHi Brad, I do agree with Rich, I did the sitting out for a year and watching, and although you can learn quite a lot it still not as much as just getting out there and running with us. I raced stock cars not so many years ago and I will tell you from one racer to another I have not seen as much help and caring come out of any racing association and I have seen with these kart guys. All are willing to give you as much assistance as you need along the way and never ask for anything in return. This was really refreshing from what I have come out of years ago.
If you need help with anything please feel free to call me at home 970-669-4428 or send me a private message on the forum and let me know how I can help. It wasn’t so long ago I was in your position, however with everyone helping its not long before you catch on.Joe

As a fellow n00b I like the sound of that. Rookie Rumble day at IMI or TTAC would be some good fun. Of course it be good to have some experienced folks out there as well.
When I was doing SOLO w/ the SCCA they often had what the called “SOLO Schools” A day of instruction with a nice little SOLO competition between the rookies at the end. The way the experienced community is around here I’m sure we could convice some guys to participate. You know, showing us lines, tech tips, and whatnot in the morning, with a “Rookie Rumble” for the finale. I’m sure it be even easier if us n00bs would donate some greenbacks and “after karting refreshments.”
Just a thought.
