Most of the videos we produce for Kartweb are part of a subscriber service, however we do sell some DVD’s. We will be putting together a limited number of Steamboat Springs DVD’s and be taking orders next week. It wasn’t one of our better videos as the vantage point could have been better. Normally when I do a single camera shoot I get a scissors lift and place it strategically.
I hope you can appreciate what it entails to produce regular videos for webcasting. We have reached 1000 subscribers, and I feel that the $25 cost of the subscription is a pretty good bargain. Compare that with the cost of an 8 X 10 photo from any photographer.

I very much enjoyed Steamboat Springs, and wish I could have brought my son to race. The event was very well run, and I hope everyone recognizes how well your series has been put together. I think you have a great formula and a lot of really good people working together to make it very enjoyable. If I were to sum up in one word what really stood out, that word would be “cohesiveness”.

About Kartweb processes
We had hoped to have some of the cost offset with advertising, but that didn’t happen. This was mostly due to risk perceived by many of the small business owners with this new technology. Champion karting took this risk, and the number of chassis they import has grown by over 400%. (Don’t just take my word for it ask the Berryhills).
The task of putting together a serice like Kartweb is gargantuan compared to a typical news & forum site. Here are some of the steps;
1) Text report
2) Create Storyboard draft
3) Download tapes to PC and take notes
4) Finish Storyboard
5) Edit video(s)
6) Build master video file(s)
7) Encode for web
8) Upload files to web
9) Store master files on DVD
That’s just a summary but it takes about 30 minutes of work for each minute of video produced with 1 camera, or an hour per minute with 4 cameras.
Just the videos from Steamboat Springs take up more disk space than the entire ekartingnews has available. One download of all 6 SSGP videos uses as much bandwidth as ekartingnews uses in an entire month. Thats not intended to put ekartingnews down, I think they have a great site. Thats to give an idea of the size of server and connections we have to maintain to the web.
We use a mainframe server that has a 1.3 Gigabit connection to the web. It has 6 CPU’s, 3Gig of RAM, and 600Gig of diskspace.
We have 9 cameras ranging from Sony VX2000 retrofit with Zeiss lenses, to Hitachi Mini DVD (yes Disks!) that are used for the on-board stuff.
Our editing workstation is a Dual processor system overclocked to 3.7 Gig. complete with a liquid cooling system.
