ParticipantRoger,
My vote for a night race, in the future, is YES!. A very American thing to do. Saturday night at the races. I grew up around the RMMRA, (Midgets) they always raced at night.

ParticipantThe night racing at Bandimere back in the day was a big motivator for us to get back into karting again. Tight program, cooler temps and paint and chrome just looks so damn cool and fast at night.
If you’re going to start running at night, I may have to come out of retirement. :win
Great idea guys. Now if you can just get this Colorado racing crowd to support great racing while there is a chance to have great racing. Before the chances dry up and are gone.
My .02

ParticipantRight on Rick.
I’ve done a couple of night races and I loved them. The karts look fantastic at night.

ParticipantHere’s an idea. Goes back to the old days… Heat one is lined up according to qualifying. Heat tow. INVERTED! First starts at the back. Only the karts running at the end of the first heat invert. The one not running go to the back behind the heat one winner.
results of heat two, is the line up for the Main.Just a thought.

ParticipantWell we met this evening and if we can find a couple of folks to sponsor some of the lights at $125 a piece we are mostly likely going to do a night race. We are checking to make sure the Fire Department and Ambulance service can be there until 10:00pm. If you know of anyone who would help support sponsoring a Light stand let us know. As of now we have several already sponsored but need about eight more. We’ve talked to PPIR and they are working with us to make this happen Saturday night July 9th. Please spread the news about the race. It would be nice to have about 50 plus racers to offset the cost of the race and the overhead. An official notification will come Thrusday afternoon after we verfiy the safety equipment. If this comes off right and racers support this we may go to all night races the rest of the season. Good news is the garage has lights. A preliminary schedule would look like this:
Saturday
8:00am gates open
10:00am-1:00pm test and tune
1:30pm-2:30pm Break – Lunch
2:30pm-4:30pm Qualifying
4:30pm-6:30pm Heat Races
6:30pm-7:30pm Break – Dinner
7:30pm-10:00+pm MainsJune 30, 2011 at 4:02 am #65165[email protected]

That’s the way we did it in the ’80s, or at the very least the Top 8 were inverted. It was great, though of course a bit harder on parts at times.

ParticipantHumm,, It stays light out till about nine in the evening and more karts will show up to race till 10PM if you spend over a grand for a couple hours of artificial light? I am just questioning the use of hard to get sponsorship money for karting by lighting up a dark track for a couple of hours for karters that are investing 2 days to be there anyway. Sorry I may be too pessimistic, yet I see this as getting one day of karting from my two days of karting investment.
Terry and Eric, Back in my days there wasn’t qualifying we would draw/pea pick for line up of heat 1 and inverted all for heat 2. Results from booth heats combined determined the line up for the main.

ParticipantRod:
Did you race at Curly’s, Longmont, and /or Aspen in the early ’80s? Geez, we had to know each other then, I raced with Barbells, the Thomas’, David Donner, Neil Hillmann, Nils Holten, Bubba Stahl, Wynn Vaughn, and several others who were pretty quick. We had a great group and it was fabulous.
At Curly’s, you’re right (if that’s where you mean), we didn’t qualify for most races other than the big ones. Longmont we typically did qualify, IIRC, I think we drew at Aspen (Woody Creek).
Them was the days….

ParticipantAll good points Rodney, are you going to show up if its two days? As of right now this is still up in the air. I just got back from PPIR and it looks like we’ll need upwards of 20 lights to ligth the track. It looks for now like we’ll go with a Saturday and Sunday event, and plan a night race for August or Sept. Stay tune this still could change if someone steps up and sponsors the ligthing.

ParticipantEric, My 80’s started with somehow graduating from Hereford TX. and started karting in Kathy Tx. west of Amarillo with 5 Mac 101’s and a yamaha kart. Them lasted about 1 summer, then moved back to my hometown of Marshalltown Ia. and raced the sprint track there and the dirt oval at Newton, along with every street race they had around Ia. Them races are where the sponsors stepped up and promoted karters to come out of the woodwork and race. Jimmy Carter, Ron Jones and Gus Trader would draw 300 karts for one day of 6 classes. 4 cycle (light, medium, heavy) and 2cycle (light, medium, heavy)
$300 for 1st, $200.00 for 2nd, $100.00 for 3rd and $300.00 ambulance rides. Peak pick for the one race Gran prix start with over 50 karts fighting for the first turn off main street to first street.
I still have the flyers, entry forums, race notes and even one of my old motors from back then. I see at Ron Jones Des Moines Gran prix I entered and raced 4 classes plus one pit pass, a total of $148 for a possible $1200.00 pay back.
New rolling Chassis’s were $1250.00 with Bridgestones, along with a $425.00 Blueprinted Tater digger motor.
Oh well, them were fun times yet I am still manufacturing new great memories every time I get a chance to race a kart with other victims of the hobby.Roger, I’ll try to get myself and two other new racers down there for a weekend of fun.
Gunter, Krivanek? You mean the star on River Rats Gold & silver buyer/trader Mark Krivanek of Krivanek Jewelers. - AuthorPosts
