    Ken,
Depending on who put the clip in. the cause might have been caused by install error.
After the clip is seated the gap in the clip should be 180 from the gap in the piston.
If you having a reputible shop do the re-build it shoud not be an issue for a repeat.

Thanks for the feedback Jack. Since it was me who did the top end, install error could be a possibility (though I’ve done quite a few with no problems). Honestly I haven’t heard that the clip gap should be 180 from the slot in the piston so thanks for that tidbit! I’ve always installed them with the gap at 12 o’clock so maybe this had something to do with it. Thanks again.

    Ken,

I think that may be part of your problem. Were these installed at 12 o’clock mid night, or noon. I’ve made a few of those “midnight gap errors” myself. 😳

    Hi Ken,

I think the fact that you had 5 race weekends on the top end is what caused it to fail.
3 weekends at the most on a top end is what I would recommend, I’m guessing it’s a 2 day weekend.

The stock Honda can run much, much longer than three weekends on a top end without failure if everything is installed correctly.
A built Honda, you’re right, 3 weekends is pushing it.

    Ok,

I think there may be something with where the opening on the clip may be. Seems the opening should be at the top or bottom. (0 or 180 degree’s) This way, centrifical force cannot close the gap on the clip causing failure.

This from a new Cr 125 competitor who has had the VERY RARE piston ring end gap pin come loose. (new piston) Never encountered any damage on the Icc after several years of running? Just lucky? No parts available till August? (cylinder on back order) Hum?

Still seems a great package. Thanks for the outpouring of help with keeping our junk running! You can tune it. You can just run it.

First engine failure in 6 years. Probably a fluke.

All those years of loaning things out, without keeping track paid off this weekend. We were able to keep running after word got around the pits. Thanks Milnes.

    Thanks,

    Rick
