ParticipantSince making many changes to the Kid Kart rules, and going with a spec gear, the next thing was to choose which gear. Right now, the idea was to get the speeds in the ball park of what the rest of the nation is doing. We were going to start with the 78 – wanted to use it at IMI this weekend – to get an idea if it is close, or if we need to change it. So, you are right, it might need to be looked at per track. The 78 was just a starting point.
Look for the actual gear for the first race in GJ to be declared next week. If you have information that could help determine what it should be, maybe you could email Rusty.
Thanks,

InactiveAngie,
in a PM on Monday morning you told me that IMI would be runninng the 78, at IMI on monday afternoon Brad told me that had been changed and the gearing would be open. ????????March 30, 2005 at 3:34 pm #50290Brad Linkus
ParticipantThere has been quite a few comments about the gear issue. Most of the people I have talked to want the gear to be open. The class rep has also expressed that to me. I will leave it up to the class on Sunday as to what they would like to do with the gear selection.

InactiveAngie,
If I remember correctly I was voted to be the representative for the Comer
Classes at the CSC meeting a few months ago. One of the reason for that
nomination was my knowledge of the Comer Karts. I have not been consulted on
several key issues which are pertinent to the Comer racers. I have discussed
the 78 Gear with Brad two weeks ago and again just this week on Monday. As
he put it “Majority Rules. We will run an open gear if everyone wants to.” I
have spoken with several of the regulars and they agree to leave the gearing
OPEN. I am curious who is driving the Gear rule? Making the Comers run a
specific gear the karts will go even slower than what they are running in the rest of the country. The reason we run the open gear and K&N filter is to compensate for the high altitude Example: at lower altitude (1200 ft)
On March 4th and 5th, 2005 Cody ran a South Western Regional Cup race in Norman, OK.
Rules were 89 gear, stock exhaust, and stock intake. He ran a 1:11 lap @13,200
rpm on the track doing 44 mph to 46 mph the kid that got last place ran a 1:17
36 mph.
On March 26th, 2005 we raced at GJMS with an Open gear, Open exhaust,
K & N cleaner. He ran a 1:20 @ 8,800 r.p.ms and 32 mph same engine running 10 mph to 12 mph. slower 4000 rpm less and 10 seconds slower.
In essence we are still running slower than the slowest comer 50 racer at Norman, OK. As Brad said “Majority Rules” and I have yet to see anyone begging
for the Gear Rule. P.S just like baking a cake you need to compensate for the
High altitude and in racing they say only do one change at a time, which is the stock muffler at this point.

InactiveMike,
In response to your earlier post:
1- You were not “voted” in as class rep you volunteered.
2-Your discussion with Brad is just that- a discussion with Brad and IMI, not with the CSC. The majority might rule at IMI, but that is not necessarily the majority for the CSC. The IMI regulars are just that IMI regulars.
3-To answer your question regarding “who is driving the gear rule” A sanctioning body called SKUSA is, who strives to be equal, fair and safe in accordance with the rest of the country.
4-Your entire reasoning for the gear change is irrelevant, due to the fact that this class should not be about speed. It should be about developing safe racers that know the rules, acquire basic driving skills and learn good sportmanship in a FAIR environment.
As I recall the most serious accident in comers last year involved your son, you should count your blessings that there are parents who are concerned about the safety of their children.Jay Jacobellis

ParticipantJay I resent the fact that you call the Imi regulars “just regulars” I don’t think that you have enough vision that “the regulars” might become csc members if they are treated like they are at IMI. At IMI I feel like the racers input is at least taken into considreration and we are not told this is how it is like it or leave it. I do not think that SKUSA is driving the gear rule I think that it is other people involved in this whole deal are driving that. If you would like to give me a call I would be happy to share my thoughts on that.

2. Angie – What happened to the original post that spec’ed the gear at 78? It seems to suddenly be missing? This was presented as a done deal last week not as a test this week? The 78 gear was based on a resonable calculation with a guiding purpose not the passing “feelings” of racers or managers who do not have any of their children running in this class.
Scott, the original post is under Q&A for the Race Director
http://www.thecoloradokarter.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1262&start=20
I thought it was agreed, but am sorry to say that I was wrong 😳and the class purpose is on the Rules page… http://www.coloradosprintchampionship.com/kidkartrules.htm
this is what is says….
Class Purpose
The Kid Kart class is an entry level racing environment which primary purpose is to offer a safe, fun, and educational experience for its participants. This class serves as an opportunity to train and teach beginning drivers, and their parents, about proper event procedures, safety rules, racing etiquette, driving skills and sportsmanship.Scott, I do not think that the personal name calling and accusations belong here on this forum. Some of the things you brought up are total rumors, and it is not fair to bring it up on a public forum. I have deleted your post because of this. You are welcome to repost your ideas WITHOUT the personal digs. I have tried not to moderate on this forum, and let people say their piece, but with this I have to draw the line.
Let’s try to keep this conversation constructive to the class. I think there have been major steps in a good direction for the Kid Kart class. Now we need to get to the track and see how it goes. We can all discuss this reasonably, like adults. Remember the class purpose and what we want to teach our kids. That includes our behaviour off the track (like at the drivers’ meeting).
As to what the gear will be at the first CSC race… it will still be announced next week, by our Race Director.
I hope everyone is planning on attending this first IMI race!!!
see you there.

InactiveWe are just starting out this year and watching all this take place makes me think twice about getting my son involved in karting. Bottom line here is that it is about our kids learning, having fun and being safe.

InactiveFor those of you who are thinking of entering the comer class please do not be dicouraged by all the things you read. We have raced for three years and I can’t think of anything I enjoy more than a day at the races with my family. Of course for me it is alot of work, and the kids have fun. I have heard and seen just about everything in the racing environment. I have met some really nice people and I have met some not so nice people.
As with any sport there is a level of competition that brings out the worst in the parents and the best in the kids. I also coach hockey and the competitive spirit exists there as well. The coaching director there this year reminded me of what this is all about , should you choose to be involved. “Less than 1% of all the Junior Hockey players will ever make it to the College level much less the Pro’s.” Can you imagine the odds of your child becoming the next Formula one driver? However as parents we all think if we push hard enough it will be our little one that makes it. We all like to see our childeren excel at the things they do, so we can feel good about ourselves as well. If you go to the track watch the kids before and after the race. They all run around and play together, get in the karts drive, and come back and play together again until the next race. Most of the time thay have forgotten about winning or losing ten minutes after the race. Until the dreaded “DRIVE HOME” where dad will lecture all the way about what went wrong if the kid did not place first. There will be tempers that flare, there will be the Parents who live vicariously through there kids,
there will be the people who claim to know it all, and most of all there will be the friendships that will endure for years to come. This, like anything has good and bad. It is what you choose to make of it. I know alot of wonderful people in the racing community. Some of the best times we have had were not at the track at all, they were after the races when we shared dinner together or watched all the kids go swimming. We have had different rules all three years we raced and that is okay with me. The karting in Colorado is growing, and growing pains come with that. Remember it is for the kids, whatever the rules are, make it fun for them and yourselves. Don’t take anything (other than the Safety of the kids) too seriously. Go out and have some fun and meet alot of nice people win or lose. The kids know how to win and lose, ask yourself as a parent if you do, and if you can teach your child the character skills they will need in real life when they don’t win. See you at the races!!!!My humble opinion,

Inactivezipnby,
Well said. I was writing almost the exact same post but unable to put into words as skillfully as you have done. We ran the last two events at IMI last year and everyone there was very helpful, owner, officials, drivers and parents. My son will most likley not be the next F1 star, the odds are so far out there as you mentioned. All i know is i have a five year old who asks me every single day (not kidding) “Dad we are going to the track today”.

ParticipantZipnby,
I don’t honestly know who zipnby is but I want to add how much I appreciate what you said and how much I agree. I don’t know how many of you read my post before it was sensored, (not for bad language or false information, everything was factually true and known by many) but that it was too honest. I have been guilty of this before. Anyway you’re right on, my sons and I had a great first year together and I didn’t say a thing about anything for a year, I just listened and watched. I didn’t feel it was my place until I had an accurate picture of what was going on. From these observations and many conversations with Kid Kart people around the country I had two goals going into this coming season. #1 as the highest priority was to increase the safety for the kids by reducing the excessive speed. And I will state again as I have many times, I have not heard an argument aginst accomplishing this by having a mathematically calculated spec gear wear as the one, or very few can articulate any logic what so ever as to their position. This baffles me sinse what they are choosing to gamble with is their own childrens safety and well being. If anyone wonders why I am so passionate about this that is why, and believe it or not I don’t speak out normally but there is nothing more important! The other was secondary but still makes sense and that is to actually have enforceable, consistent rules. If we read the pupose of this class it is to train, etc. etc. having a IROC type formate is the best way to do this. I know there are some who simply cannot relate to this as a guiding objective and who are of the paradigm “the faster the better!”The challenges with this class are not having fun, we do. The challenge isn’t participation, we have it. The challenge has been lack of clarity of purpose, now we have that. This serves as the guide by which everything else is created, writen, structured and judged. To change the rules now after all the work that has been done to create them, including the correct decision to spec the gear, (calculated to limit the top speed regardless of track to approximately 35mph) would be to say that this class purpose means nothing. The very spirit of this class is written in that purpose. Read the WKA Kid Kart purpose, read SKUSA’s spirit statements. Trying to run this class, (let alone a whole series) without a defined purpose and and a system, (rules) to fulfill that purpose is like hiking with a compass that has no “North” on it. You may get some exercise, but you won’t get anywhere. These are principles, they are self evident.
For those who did see my post before it was sensored, (so much for living in America) and may have thought it too much, I apologize.
As long as it’s safe, we will will be out there with bells on and I encourage others new or old to do the same.
With respect,
Scott Hannum

ParticipantThank You for your post I to agree that the kids safety should be the most important, and I have to apologize to Jay J. for being to harsh on the last post. I got into this sport thinking that it would be cool for my son and daughter to be able to drive at ages 5 and 7. I did not think that it would get so involved as it has become. My daughter has decided that she would not race and my son has decided that he wants to. When we first started it was all about me pushing my son to go as fast as he could, pretty soon he did not want to go to the track any more!!! I was loosing track of the whole reason I got my son into karting. I started talking to my son about having fun and changing my perspective and now since meeting other boys and him playing with them during practice sessions he has wanted to go driving more. I dont think that we should put so much pressure on our son’s or daughters that they feel like this is a job. The main reason for this kid kart class is for our children to have fun and I think that the parents (including myself) are loosing site of that fact. I hope that our children can race and have fun and the parents do the same.
