Fun facts on lightning: it is almost common knowledge that a car is a safe place to be during lightning. It is also widely believed that the reason is the rubber tires. The first is true and the second is false. Lightning has potential of millions to 100s of millions of volts: not much is going to insulate that. The steel cage in a car provides a much better path for lightning to the ground than the air and you in the car. That is why a car is a safe place. ( this is the same way lightning rods on your house protect it and you)

Now for a kart there is no steel cage to protect you, and your helmet is a bit higher than anything nearby. I wouldn’t want to be out there in a lightning storm.

P.S. A saw where lightning hit the racing surface at Putnam Park years ago. It required a two square foot patch.
