| Announcement: Team News: Kartworks? A.J. Noud and Kyle Ray in Monaco |
| Posted: Kurt Freiburg @ Thu 10 11, 2007 7:30 pm GMT |
Rocky Mountain Kartworks? team owner (and former SKUSA SuperNats champ) A.J. Noud, and multiple Colorado Sprint Championship driver of the year Kyle Ray have been invited by Suter Racing to be their factory drivers for their F1-derived Vampire engines this weekend at the Monaco Kart Cup.
This will be the second year that these two have gone to the 4 stroke specific Monaco Kart Cup. Sprint and Midget pilot Ray drove last year, and was the fastest of the Americans with a 6th place finish, while Noud played the Supertuner role under the Vampire tent. It was a huge education for the team. ?All in all, it was a great experience; the magazines were all over us, we got lots of TV coverage, and by Sunday the locals were treating us with respect? was A.J.?s summary.

Now that they are familiar with the beautiful circuit (which includes many of the famous turns from the Formula 1 race), the euro driving style, and the country, the pair are cautiously optimistic that the can achieve a top placing this year. They?re also much more familiar with the powerplant ? Kartworks has been running several Vampires on their GP chassis throughout the ?07 season in Colorado, and will be competing in the TaG World Championships at IMI Motorsports on October 7th, just before leaving for Monaco.
Once landed, Noud and Ray (along with the Vampire importer, engines4racing.com?s Brad Linkus) with link up with Suter Racing?s factory team, running Zanardi chassis for the weekend.
And rumors are strong (but unconfirmed) in the European press that there may be some very famous competition at this race ? namely, the most successful driver in the history of Formula 1, Michael Schumacher.
But that isn?t a concern for the focused Coloradoans. They only want to repeat their North American success in Europe. The only rumor they want to verify is that the champagne tastes better in Monaco.

Most of the regular racers were eagerly looking forward to the final round of the Colorado Sprint Championship in Grand Junction this past weekend. In years past, the Grand Junction round was usually in the heat of the summer, but this year?s event was in late September and the weather would be milder. Who would have thought that it would rain!
But rain it did and it dawned Sunday morning cold and very wet. The rain caused a delay that forced the cancellation of qualifying. It was decided to set the grid for the pre-finals via the points in the championship. Most of the Shockwave Karting teams members decided to sit out the pre-finals as the fields were smaller than normal (typical for end of the year races).
First up for the team was TaG Senior. Both Jeff and Greg Welch would be starting in the back but we all knew that wouldn?t last long. Greg moved up 7 spots on the first lap with his brother moving up 5. By lap 6 of the 20 lap main Greg was up a couple more spots and quickly running down the class leader. However, Greg wouldn?t make 7 laps as his chain broke, making Greg a spectator for this race. But it was still interesting.
By the time of Greg?s early departure, his brother Jeff had worked his way through the field. He was now in second spot in class and was running down the class leader. By lap 12 he caught the class leader, and on lap 13 he took the lead. Jeff pulled out a nice lead of about 2 seconds when he caught one of the drivers in the 4 cycle class in this combined event. While Jeff quickly got around the 4 cycle, he couldn?t shake him and the ensuing battle proved to be costly. It allowed the second place kart to catch up on the final lap. What happened on that lap depends on your point of view but in the end, Jeff lost two positions and finished 3rd in class.
Jeff had the privilege of driving the new 2008 Shockwave Karting TaG chassis in its first race debut. A race win would have been sweet, but he can take consolation in setting fast lap in class. Jeff was a full .4 of a second quicker than the next fastest kart, his brother Greg on his Shockwave Karting chassis. With further development, we are confident that this kart will be significantly quicker than the current model.
Next up for the Shockwave Karting team was the Spec Honda class. For this one, the officials were kind enough to hold the start so that Jeff could get out of his TaG kart and into the shifter. Again starting dead last, Jeff put his head down and headed for the front. By turn two, Jeff passed much of the field under braking and moved into third spot. By turn 4, Jeff passed for second and took off for the leader. The chase didn?t last long and Jeff made a clean pass under braking in turn one on lap 6 and proceeded to drive to a commanding lead. In the closing laps the second place driver, Keenen Schmike, tried to make things interesting, but Jeff drove his fastest lap on lap 19 and took a hard earned win.
Last up was the 125 shifters or Pro class. Greg would contest this class and for this one he did do the pre-final. Starting in 4th position, Greg held his position on the start and settled in to move towards the front. By lap 4 Greg was in second spot and looking for more. However, that was as far forward as he was going since the eventual race winner, Ben Schermerhorn, was putting down an incredible string of laps. So Greg decided to settle into a groove and maintain his second place position.
There was a Trophy Dash race for the Junior 1 kids. In that race, Grant Owen jumped into the lead by turn 1 and never looked back. Grant is now 2 for 2 in CSC action. Look for this young driver to do well next year.
It was a good day for the Shockwave Karting team. But for a little bad luck, the factory drivers, Jeff and Greg Welch, would have taken home two first and two seconds. However, they ?only? had to settle for one trophy for each step on the podium. Grant got another win in h...
